As another salty old sailor, I say women and sodomites have no place on a ship.

“Full disclosure: It has been 35 years since I last had the deck.”

31 for me.

“Check the varying speed of the cargo ship. Why would it be at cruising for several hours, come to a near DEAD stop for a short time then up to cruising speed, back down to a near dead stop for several hours, then back up to full speed less than an hour before impact??”

Problems with its propulsion gear?

Barring a major engineering casualty, there is no reason for this whatsoever. Even if it is one of the busiest areas in the world, it shouldn’t happen without a mechanical failure, regardless.

It doesn’t make a bit of difference if the civilian vessel hit the warship, or the other way around. It is a US Navy warship, and if there is no engineering casualty, should have maneuvered to avoid.

There is a reason the bar is supposedly set high to attain the command of a vessel...because you are responsible for everything that occurs on your ship.

If the Captain was on the bridge, he was responsible. If his XO, or some other officer was the OOD, the Captain is still responsible.

Ships that have the capability to target and destroy ballistic missiles should not have collisions with other ships. I can understand a ship hitting an uncharted shoal, colliding with another ship in a combat situation, etc.

But not colliding with a civilian ship, even in a heavily travelled waterway.

The reason we place the blame on this Navy personnel is that those of us with experience know that without an engineering casualty, that is where the blame is going to be.

IF it turns out this ship was electrically dead in the water prior to the collision, after being buzzed by a certain adversary aircraft...that’s not good.

While we were developing electric everything and embedded systems designed to reduce manning requirements, the adversary was developing ways to zap the crap out of it all.

We can no longer allow adversary assets to get so close. Until this issue is solved technologically, we simply cannot permit adversary assets to approach our warships literally within a stone’s throw.

33 years for me since my OOD days. I qualified as an Ensign during a 6 month STANAVFORLANT cruise through Europe. And IIRC, qualifying as an OOD and getting SWO qualified was a task for every junior officer...even the Engineers. You are correct though that the CHENG did not stand bridge watches as he was basically on 24 he watch over the propulsion plant. I was in Weapons Dept as the Gunnery Officer when I made SWO, then was promoted to Navigating Officer as a LTJG. On my ship, ALL CBDR contacts we had to notify the skipper inside a certain range. Being that a tanker is so huge, I’m surprised they weren’t following the ‘3-2-1’ rule we applied to aircraft carriers LOL.

No kidding. How does a destroyer run into a giant container ship unless there is an intense storm or dense fog and no one has working radar?

While we were operating with the Numbnuts (Nimitz) there was no 3 in the 3-2-1 rule.

We were forbidden to pass ahead of the carrier without the Captain on the bridge.

I had the conn coming alongside the Numbnuts for a practice UNREP and the damn carrier was dumping trash off the fantail. I thought the CO was going to come unglued. He made a rather strained, yea that's the word strained, radio call to the carrier to get them to knock it off before we sucked a bag of trash into the main condenser.

The container ship had right of way, the Fritz was the burdened vessel and should have stood well away from the container ship. Also, the Fritz being smaller and much more maneuverable typically will give way to a larger vessel even when they have right of way. A Navy ship being broadsided in clear conditions is hard to fathom ... all Navy ships underway, in addition to all the sophisticated radar they have on board, still have sailors stationed port and starboard as lookouts.

No, I’m mocking yours. You may have some limited knowledge on limited subjects, but in the overall scheme of life, you’re sorely lacking. There really is no other reason for you to be such a jerk.

Please see my post #136 and let me know if you are still so sure of the situation.

I know I'm not.

Let’s assume the container ship was hijacked by ISIS or the Norks and intentionally targeted the American vessel. Isn’t a $billion ship supposed to have the capacity to avoid any collision whether inadvertent or intentional? In this day and age shouldn’t every ship or aircraft be assumed a potential threat and never permitted to breach a certain perimeter? Barring a catastrophic failure of the ships navigation, steering or propulsion systems - leaving the ship unable to avoid contact, this has to be human error on part of the ships crew.

What explaination could there be for a ship backtracking like that?

It was ABSOLUTELY and INDISPUTABLY the fault of the US crew. They were transiting in the most sophisticated warship to ever sail and got broadsided by a 39,000 ton container ship at low speed.

You are completely wrong about your placement for the blame, and wrong about the container ship being at low speed.

Have you seen the 'track' of the container ship ? Can you explain it ?

The container ship rammed the Navy ship which had come to a dead stop as a last ditch attempt to avoid the collision.

Problems with its propulsion gear?

That doesn't explain why, after ramming the Navy Ship, it was able to turn and continue on it's journey at high speed with no apparent steering or propulsion problems.

Duterte had better get busy.

This was a MOZLUM attack on a US warship.
