The fire that swept through a 27-storey west London tower block in just 15 minutes after a fridge exploded could be one of the worst in British history amid fears nobody on the top three floors survived.
Six people are known to have died after fire engulfed Grenfell Tower in White City at 1am today but Scotland Yard says the death toll is expected to rise significantly.
A community leader working to locate victims, who asked not to be named, revealed that nobody who lived on the top three residential floors may have survived.
He said: 'We have a list of missing people - there are so many. It's possible there are more than 50, possibly hundreds'.
Police would not confirm how many people are unaccounted for because the building is still on fire 12 hours after it started. ok

Dreadful. RIP.
SJS?
I personally think the idea of building high rises and sky scrapers is a foolish idea. The fire department cannot contain fires that high.
For reasons I can’t fathom, there was a “stay in place” policy in effect for fires in the building, unless it was in your particular apartment unit.
Holy pressure cookers, Batman, an exploding refrigerator? The manufacture of certain things that go boom is exothermic. Putting it in the fridge to quench the reaction isn’t enough. That’s my theory.
If so, the authorities over there won’t admit it.
Wait... This was caused by an “exploding fridge?”
That’s funny, I’ve never heard of refrigerators just exploding like that. But then, I’d never heard of pressure cookers going to a marathon and exploding either.
Sounds logical. Exploding refrigerators is common. Why, I’ve had 2 explode on me in the last month... sarc off
Exploding refrigerator? If they say so.
Anyone remember “Towering Inferno”?
It would appear that the cladding used to modernize the exterior was highly flammable. Since several people survived the blaze, I would surmise that the interior of the building was not affected as much? With the fire progressing as quickly as it did, it would lead me to believe that the outer rim was the greatest hit.
Residential comments. FD had not made a determination as far as I saw. With the building near to collapse, it could be a while before the fire folks have an answer. But 15 minutes? Wow!
When I worked in a 30+ office tower, we were told that we would not evacuate during a fire. Our fire drills instructed us to go UP several floors and wait for the situation to be cleared.
They don’t have your health at heart with that foolish “escape” plan. Toxic smoke. Potential to be cut off/stranded. Better to have you remain at work, getting work done, and accounted for.
Don’t put tannerite in them and shoot them either.
Possibly using propane or butane, an “eco-friendly” refrigerant required in European refrigerators. If so, words fail to describe this self-imposed disaster.
That was the policy at my former office.
I was watching coverage this morning before work. A person said ‘faulty refrigerator,’ as opposed to exploding fridge.
Either way, in my 63 years on earth, I have never heard of either one. Electrical issues are one thing, and of course, there are electrical fires, but c’mon, a faulty fridge causes a massive fire? I’m gonna call muzzies on this one; either on purpose or workplace accident.
I saw photos and videos of that fire, and the building acted just like a flue. The people on the highest floors stood no chance. Terrible fire.
Whatever material they added to the outside of the building as cladding or as an ornamental enhancement is VERY flammable and obviously toxic.
