The Trump administration took a step toward expansion of the West Elk Coal Mine in Somerset on Thursday as the U.S. Forest Service began accepting comments on a plan that was welcomed by the coal industry and scorched by environmental organizations.
The Forest Service is seeking comment on whether it should approve a lease of some 17 million tons of coal beneath a roadless area of the Gunnison National Forest. The lease has been hotly contested with environmental organizations saying the lease would undermine the Sunset roadless area of the forest and contribute to climate change.
Industry officials, however, said the mining operation there is a significant contributor to the economy.
This is an important mine to Colorado, said Stan Dempsey, president of the Colorado Mining Association. Its time for the agency to take the right action.
This proposal is the latest example of the Trump administrations apparent desire to ignore science, poison the air we breathe, and undermine our shared responsibility to be good stewards of the earth, said Ted Zukoski for Earthjustice, a not-for-profit law firm.

While we wont know definitively how much coal is located on the lease modifications until we conduct exploration, we expect the addition of these reserves to extend the life of the West Elk mine which currently supports more than 200 direct and many more indirect jobs.

Liberals are more concerned with the political climate changing. Trump is delivering on his promise of more jobs, less regulations and a better economy.

Maybe they can do horizontal mining if Wyoming doesn’t approve of it’s own.

The Denver Post: Colorado coal jobs drop to less than 1,000 as Tri-State New Horizon mine shuts.
Operators of the New Horizon coal mine in western Colorado shut down production Thursday ..
Closing the New Horizon dropped the number of active coal mines in Colorado to seven and the total employment to 995. Thats down from 2,118 jobs in 2003. Colorado mines produced 12.8 million tons of coal in 2016, down from 18.7 million in 2015, continuing a 67 percent decrease since 2004.

Hope they get approval. I would get along with Ted Zukoski if I ever met him.
