A U.S. Marine who graduated early was barred from participating in his Indiana high schools commencement ceremony Tuesday because he was wearing his uniform, the Northwest Indiana Times said.
Pfc. Jacob Stanley graduated from Crown Point High School in December and then joined the Marines, the paper said. Stanley completed boot camp on Friday, flew home for his graduation and even practiced with his classmates during the day, the paper reported.
But Principal Chip Pettit reportedly told Stanley that he wouldnt be allowed to wear his uniform at the ceremony, the Times said. Stanley reportedly got more than a few calls and texts from friends who encouraged him to wear it anyway and take pride in it, the paper said and thats just what Stanley did.
However, when Stanley showed up for commencement in his dress blues, the Times said he was turned away. While his name was listed in the graduation program, the paper said school officials didnt read his name along with his fellow graduates.
While Pettit praised the military telling WMAQ-TV we are forever grateful for the sacrifices that they make on a daily basis for our freedom he defended the cap-and-gown-only decision.

Period.
Agreed.
I tend to agree - rules are rules.
If soldiers are OK, how about cop uniforms or firefighter uniforms? Where do you draw the line - its a slippery slope and easy to avoid by having rules that everyone must follow.
Couldn’t he have worn the uniform under the cap and gown? Or was that prohibited too?
I wore my Navy Dress Blues to my HS graduation in 1963.
I’m so torn on this.
A Marine not allowed to wear his uniform with pride anywhere anywhen? Fighting time!
On the other hand...
Uniform of the Day was cap and gown.
I tried to read if that was an option. Article didn’t say.
Apparently he wanted uniform only.
1963 was before it all came apart——good times then.

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
A military uniform would be the only thing I'd make an exception for.
But kids wear their gowns over the street clothes they show up in. There'd be no difference than him showing up in his uniform and putting the cap and gown over it.
I hope whoever the dumb*** is who made this decision pays for it dearly.
He could have worn the cap and gown over his uniform. He couldn’t have been on duty and didn’t need to wear the uniform, but both would have been the best solution.

Yep.
And if allowances are made for soldiers or cops or firefighters...
Then the queers and femi-nazis will demand p-caps, pink tutu’s, rainbow panties and worse.
Our local high school wouldn’t let any “early finishers” walk in graduation or go to prom. Friend of mine’s daughter was treated that way. Work extra hard and graduate in December and the school is done with you. Spend four years in the “Alternative School” and you get all the bells and whistles—and the screaming relatives when your name is called.
You would think that his boot camp training would have taught him that everything isn’t about him. Graduation ceremonies mean a cap & gown.
I can guarantee you that is already allowed.
Exactly. The principal was correct in his decision to uphold the rules.
My guess is that is what was offered to him, but he refused to do so, and that fact was omitted from the article. The Left does this kind of selective editing all the time. Shameful that some conservative sites do it too.
I would have told him that everyone wears the cap and gown, then left it up to him if he wants to make himself an exception.
This happens EVERY year. Every one has to wear a cap and gown. WEAR A CAP AND GOWN! Immediately after the graduation ceremony change into your uniform if you feel so inclined. No one can stop you from doing that.
TOMMYI went into a public-'ouse to get a pint o' beer, The publican 'e up an' sez, "We serve no red-coats here." The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die, I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I: O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away"; But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play, The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play, O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play. I went into a theatre as sober as could be, They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me; They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls, But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls! For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, wait outside"; But it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide, The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide, O it's "Special train for Atkins" when the trooper's on the tide. Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap; An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit. Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, 'ow's yer soul?" But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll, The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll, O it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll. We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too, But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you; An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints, Why, single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints; While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, fall be'ind", But it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind, There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind, O it's "Please to walk in front, sir", when there's trouble in the wind. You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all: We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational. Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace. For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!" But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot; An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please; An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!
