When the governor called, Sherry Japhet answered.
Japhet is a freelance makeup artist from Boise, Idaho. She's worked in the business for more than 20 years, but without a license. That's never been a problem for her. She's landed gigs from coast-to-coast, working on television sets and for fashion magazines.
Some of those calls came from Idaho Gov. Butch Otter. Japhet has helped Otter and his wife, Lori, look their best for televised public service announcements and political ads.
No more, she says.

These licensing requirements are imposed solely to restrict competition.
I’ll be sending a letter to the Governor. These licensing requirements are truly idiotic. Time to get rid of that State Board of Cosmetology!
I’m not allowed to self-medicate without a license, I’m not even allowed to measure and record yellow-light durations without a license, so I guess I shouldn’t be allowed to apply my own makeup without one.
Good thing I’m a dude.

Don’t forget the money. There are generally fees involved in obtaining a license as well as well as fines for those caught without them.

Yup. Liquor licenses are a BIG example of this!!
I expect this from a democrat. But republicans always claim to be pro-business, pro-cutting of regulations, etc. 99% turn out to be just as statist as any democrat.
Not just the licensing fees but also the continuing education requirements. A lot of money in running training courses for various professions.
This is another reason the recession has lasted as long as it has. People cannot just set up a business to tide themselves over until better economic times. There is little one can do to pull oneself up by the bootstraps when they can’t utilize skills such as laundering, haircuts, machinery repair, cooking and such, even babysitting in a lot of cases. I believe in safety but I also believe that caveat emptor is also a valid practice.
