How much power do juries really have?

The brochure in question in Michigan includes a statement from John Adams, who said of jurors, It is not only his right, but his duty to find the verdict according to his own best understanding, judgment, and conscience, though in direct opposition to the direction of the court.
Judges generally "hate" such a concept. It detracts from their image, power, authority. And from their "I'm always right view of the law".
NPR RadioLab did a recent episode on this topic. Title: “Null and Void”.
I found it disturbing and full of propaganda. They painted a guy handing out pamphlets (don’t think it was Keith Wood, but maybe, can’t remember) as a dangerous nut case. Perhaps the particular guy they talked about was. But that does not negate the validity of the argument.
I was appalled at the discussion at the end of the episode. Too much “I trust the government to know what’s best and take care of me”.
