Orange County activists Rida Hamida and Ben Vazquez wanted to find a way to promote unity among the region’s Muslim and Latino communities, so they came up with a novel idea.
After daily fasting as part of the holy month of Ramadan, dozens of local Muslims joined their Latino neighbors Saturday night in the parking lot of the new Islamic Center of Santa Ana to take part in the inaugural event of the campaign dubbed Taco Trucks at Every Mosque.
Organizers said the idea is to demystify Islam through the sharing of food and to unite two groups, Muslims and Latinos, facing increasing discrimination in the Trump era. They invited community members to sit down together after sunset — and the breaking of the day’s fast — with a meal called iftar.
"This is perfect timing. The purpose of this month is to give charity, to grow our character and our inner lives and to nourish our soul through service. What better way to do that than by learning from one another?" asked coordinator Hamida, whose goal is to host taco trucks that will serve halal tacos at every mosque in Orange County. More than 400 people attended the event.

The whole Ramadan “fasting” thing is such a joke. The feast in the morning and gorge at night. In Saudi Arabia grocery spending is 3 times what it is in any other similar period. Gorging and waste. Think a month of Thanksgiving overeating.

Near the equator, the Day is only 12 hours long. Ramadan above the Arctic Circle could be more of an issue.

It truly wasn’t my intent to duplicate a post. I always try the search option, but for whatever reason the word “Latino” didn’t show up in the recent search categories.
FWIW: Muslims have been making tremendous in-roads within the “latino” community over the past few years. Not surprising that both victim groups wish to merge.
I wonder how they will celebrate Cinco de Mayo, 12 de Octubre, and all the other heavy drinking and eating Latin holidays?

Keep this little buzz in the back of your head - Spain was occupied by Muslims for several CENTURIES until driven out by the Spanish Inquisition, and did not fully depart until Columbus set sail for the New World.
But they left behind a legacy of “crypto-Muslim” thinking that never entirely left the Hispanic soul. Great probability exists that some of these “crypto-Muslims” came to the New World, mostly as workers and peasants, who would have had little love of or allegiance to the “noble” class of conquistadors, the ones who were awarded huge tracts of land in the New World, a sort of land ownership tradition that exists in most of Latin America today. The peasants and laborers intermarried with the native people, making up the “mestizos”, white European and indigenous Latin American.
For the most part, these are the people swarming over the border from Mexico to the US, as being of mixed parentage, they are considered a “lesser class”, and lacking many oft the rights and privileges of the persons of entirely European parentage. Combine this affinity for support of Islamic causes, and you have a potent force that exceeds that of either simply Mexican illegal immigration, or of Muslim immigrants who overstay their visas.
