Memorial Day revenue at the domestic box office falls to its lowest level in nearly two decades; overseas, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales makes up ground with a $208.4 million launch.
Memorial Day weekend was no picnic this year for Hollywood at the domestic box office.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales may have won the holiday frame with a four-day haul of $77 million from 4,276 theaters, but it is the lowest start for any Pirates movie outside of the first film. It did make up ground overseas, where it found plenty of treasure with a $208.4 million launch.
No surprise. The “theater experience” has been in decline for decades. It’s also no coincidence that 4K HDTVs were the hottest selling item this past Christmas season. These days very few offerings warrant the expense and hassle of going to a movie theater.
Who cares about Hollywood movies anymore? Who wants to see endless remakes? Who wants to go see these movies when 99% of the actors hate America?
Who wants to see vile, rude, global warming, gay/trans agenda garbage? We are sick of it.
Movies made from old TV show generally suck....................
Considering that the Rock has come out as anti-Trump and is considering challenging him in the 2020 election I hope he learns a lesson about alienating his audience with his support for radical liberalism...
It’s obsolete. Now they have to sell booze and heavy food instead of just snacks to get people to come.
One of our local theaters had to close for a moth infestation, TWICE! How symbolic.
Maybe if you aim every movie at the idiot demographic, you will eventually be disappointed?
Daughter #1 and I drove past the multiplex marquis on Saturday night looking for a movie and even with the active desire to see pretty much anything, still couldn’t bring ourselves to get out of the car.
I wouldn’t watch Baywatch with your eyes! And the Pirates movies have sucked since the first. Wonder Woman will kill it, but since the SWJs are acting like its success will be the biggest victory for womyn since Hillary won the Presidency, I wish it would fail.
I haven’t gone to a movie in over 10 years.
the reason they keep getting made is that they are cheap to produce.
Baywatch as a TV show was a classic, in and of itself. The cast is now one generation older. To redo the story with different cast is a big challenge, though it could be done with the right actors, storyline and direction. The same can be said for another favorite of it’s time; Dukes of Hazard.
Chips was even worse. Baywatch was allright....
I must’ve recorded a half a dozen good movies on TCM during the Memorial Day weekend, mostly from the 40s and 50s. Really good stuff.
I was tempted to go see Baywatch, but read a review first. According to that, Hollywood even managed to mess that up.
Massive amounts of CGI lipstick on a film that’s a pig isn’t going to keep audiences coming back for more. People are getting tired of shoddy remakes and movies with terrible story lines and cartoonish action that seems like it would only appeal to the ADD crowd.
Writers these days are lazy and lack the imagination of those who worked in the golden days of cinema.
