When U2 released The Joshua Tree in 1987, it was a time when some of the U.S. was politically divided under President Ronald Reagans administration among other sociopolitical turbulence around the world. Thirty years later and with more than 25 million album copies sold, the album remains oddly relevant as the U.S. is politically divided again under a different administration and other global turmoil such as the problems in Venezuela, the Syrian refugee crisis and most recently an ISIS-led attack on Ariana Grandes concert in Manchester.

Hell, they bring me to tears just by their mere existence. ;-) (but I have read that bono does some good charitable work)
No use for him. Playing both sides.
When Queen Putt, the Marxist, Mooslim, Kenyan, Steaming Pant Load, Sissy Boy, Race Baiting Poverty Pimp Goat humping, Allah FUBAR screaming Sand Uyghur was pRes..nt I felt pretty divided.
Polikarpov U-2 NATO name: "Mule"
U2, like Springsteen, suck. Over-rated semi-musical garbage.
I saw them once in a stadium back in 1998. Their Pop Mart tour I think. The show went well I guess but that once was enough. I would never see them now. My boycott of them means nothing to them. Just my very selective self preservation from offensive entertainments.
I think they named themselves after the US spy plane which is much better known.
Sorry, but the backstory on the band’s name is much less interesting.
Have to admit, I would cry too if I paid to see commercial free live music and it turned into a giant UNICEF promo.
the west is doomed...
The hypocrisy of Bono and the rest of his band mates is typical. They made it big because of their breakthrough here in the states in the early eighties, and yet Bono is always lecturing us about the “wrongs” we do. Hey pal if it weren’t for the American people getting you over by buying your records in the millions and attending your concerts in huge numbers then U2 would still be just be another mediocre European band bouncing around the continent playing in clubs and small auditoriums hoping to catch a break.
Ah yes. The country was “divided” under Reagan. Not under Clinton or Obama. Republicans divide the country. Democrats bring them together.
Also, U2 is using the Syrian refugees as a prop to generate some type of “meaningful” moment at their concert. It makes them feel like they are doing something more than making a ton of cash. But does anyone really think that anything is going to come out of U2 putting those pictures on the screen? Will U2 donate the proceeds of its tour to Syrian refugees? Will anyone in that audience do anything other than cry and then go home to their normal life? No.
I remember when Bono publicly embraced and praised Sen. Jesse Helms (R-Trog) when most of the establishment GOP’s wouldn’t even touch him. Bono’s a bit unique that way.
I thought their video for Magnificent was the best I’ve ever seen. You can still find it on YouTube.
So they did what, now? Yawn. Nevermind, already don’t care.
Bring tears every time he sings. He has never hit the right note. Even studio stuff they can’t fix it. I am unable to listen to bad music.
I was at the concert. Didn’t see any tears around me, just a lot of bemused looks and laughter as they passed the picture around upside down. The concert was good, but felt a little low energy. Folks down on the floor seemed more into it.
Any other Freepers there?
We were there section 316. We thought it was good, but a waste to not use the screens in the stadium.
I’ve never seen them use the big screen for concerts at AT&T. Jerry Jones probably charges too much to use it. ;)
