Surrounded by the debris and dust of the fallen Twin Towers, Ray Pfeifer slept in his fire truck for a week after the terror attack on September 11, 2001.
He would spend the next eight months scouring through the rubble, "searching for friends," he said. But this weekend, he would pay the ultimate price for his heroism. After an 8-year battle, Pfeifer died of terminal cancer, caused by the noxious cloud that hung over the disaster site.
For tens of thousands of people, Pfeifer's legacy lives on through the Zadroga Bill, which secured medical care for 9/11 first responders, survivors, and recovery workers.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio honored Pfeifer with a key to New York City last year, "for his work to pass the Zadroga Bill," the mayor's office said in a tweet.

Seems that’s what he decided was his purpose. Rest in peace.
“”Pfeifer died of terminal cancer, caused by the noxious cloud that hung over the disaster site.””
And we know this how?
It was a common report due to asbestos in the building though ironically it might have stood even longer had it had even more asbestos. Asbestos is one of the better documented inhalation hazards today.
I understand asbestos and it’s health hazards but how do we know his cancer was asbestos related?
Prayers for the family and as someone who works with First Responders from 9/11 on a regular basis, I am thankful that there was a bill passed to supplement medical costs as these are real not imagined ailments and terminal illnesses

An article a year ago in Newsday stated "Terminal cancer is eating at his kidneys, bones and brain." News articles about his death only mention "9-11 related cancer".
Asbestos is known to be a factor in lung cancer and Mesothelioma (cancer in the lining of the lungs). I can find no relationship between asbestos and kidney, bone, or brain cancer.
I admire the courage, dedication and life of Ray Pfeifer. He deserves our utmost respect for that. I have found no evidence, though, that his death was caused by exposure to 9-11 related contaminants.
Your comment that the buildings might have "stood longer" had there been MORE asbestos in the building is worth repeating. Asbestos insulation was phased out of use during construction of the building. Lower floors had asbestos insulation on the steel structure in order to reduce the possibility of the kind of collapse that occurred. The upper floors had less effective non-asbestos insulation. There is good reason to believe that more people would have escaped the buildings if asbestos had been used for the entire structures.
RIP.
A carpenter friend of mine worked on the WTC. He told me that asbestos was used up to the 70th floor. Asbestos was outlawed at that time and they used a less effective fireproofing on the rest of the building.
I find it interesting that the planes hit right where the asbestos ended.
