Here is an exclusive first look at a new report that says you can put a price on success when it comes to Congress. The report by Issue One exposes the secretive money system in which members of Congress buy top spots on the most powerful committees. To raise the money, they often collect from the very interests their committees are supposed to oversee
As an example, ordinary Republicans have six-figure party dues. But it takes more to make the ranks of leadership
Sharyl: How much does a committee chairmanship cost? Nick Penniman of Issue One: So, if you want to be the chairman of a major committee in Congress, and youre Republican, youve got to deliver $1.2 million to the Republican National Congressional Committee. Democrats, its about the same thing.

It’s inherent to all types of government. Some may have a different currency that’s traded for position, but they’ll all have a king maker or king breaker they have to get by.
Our problem is we’ve no politicians with the moral conviction of following the ‘intent’ of the design instead of how to exploit ‘gaps’ in the design. Having such a conviction in today’s environment it would actually be a handicap.
So we accept it and work with it. They police themselves somewhat, but not often enough. The real movers and shakers never get touched.

60 Minutes did a story along this line; after getting elected, they literally have to spend almost every waking moment raising money in their respective party call centers, like a never-ending telethon, or of course schmoozing face-to-face.
Any legislation or thoughts of serving the voters go by the wayside in a hurry. It is designed for people with honest intentions to fail.

So, if you want to sit on the agriculture committee, you need to raise funds to get that seat.
Where do you get those funds? From big agriculture lobbyists and corporations.
The less money that you raise, the less is your power in that committee.
