Taiwan's top judges have ruled in favour of gay marriage, paving the way for it to become the first place in Asia to legalise same-sex unions. The highest court ruled that current laws preventing members of the same sex from marrying violated their right to equality and were unconstitutional. It gave parliament two years to amend existing laws or pass new ones. Wednesday's landmark decision came as the LGBT community faces increasing persecution in the region. In a press release following the ruling, the court said that "disallowing two persons of the same sex to marry, for the sake of safeguarding basic ethical orders" constituted a "different treatment" with "no rational basis." The court concluded that "such different treatment is incompatible with the spirit and meaning of the right to equality" as protected by Taiwan's constitution.

Apparently based on standards that are outside of current Taiwanese laws and most interestingly, the question now goes to the Legislative Yuan.

After the ruling, the judges flounced out of the courtroom; swishing their robes to and fro.

why would a court give same sex marriage any standing...

marriage as defined between a man and woman says nothing about love...

And therein is the problem.

If love is ignored, then logically things that are wrong or right about love will be ignored too.

And here’s the irony... love tends to be something that (classic) liberals care about more than conservatives do.

Conservatives today have left almost an entire category of human concern to the unsupported woodenness of human laws. It can be cogently pointed out that modern liberals are really muffing love today. But who’s going to stand in the gap here? If to be Christian is ipso facto to be conservative, then nobody is going to be dealing with the universal love question in a sane way... nobody.

Taiwan, Korea, much of what we would call free Asia has turned libertine. God will, if with grief, step back and let them merrily rot away if His own love is taken as something light or trivial.

Strikes me that implementing the “One China” theory could put a stop to this pretty quick.

S. Korea and Japan will likely follow suite, but I don’t see China, Indonesia or N. Korea moving in the direction of Taiwan.
