If the laptop belonged to the organization he was working for, then all of his “stuff” may be sitting out there on a backup server.
The last place I worked, if you needed a file that you had deleted we could call I.T. and they could go back to the last day you know you had it and restore it back into your system. Everything he did may be accessible if someone wanted to pursue it.

While that is a distinct possibility, do not dismiss the possibility that the police have told the family a cock and bull story that THEY think is "inside information."

Besides, pawn shops have video cameras and are often required to prepare a list to police departments of items pawned. Most require driver’s licenses, too, for I.D.

Yeah; they’ll need a dive team to have even the smallest chance of finding that laptop. Even if they found it, it’s certain the hard drive has been removed and completely destroyed. That’s why a backup server should be checked into.
There’s no telling what he knew. Enough that he wound up dead. They could have done nothing more than hand cash to 2 hoodlums on the streets. You can bet the Democrats know plenty of criminals in D.C. streets that “work for cash”.
Type “Mary Pinchot Meyer” in Google; the murder remains unsolved, her purloined diary about her affair and drug taking with JFK were never found, and by one account, the police were called BEFORE it took place since they arrived within a minute after it occurred.
