NATOs military leaders are laying the groundwork to send thousands of additional troops to Afghanistan and Iraq to train local forces locked in fierce battles with militants. The move comes as alliance leaders shape and debate a multi-year plan to protect combat gains in those countries and eliminate safe havens where extremist groups might plan attacks against the West.
I think what well see is that NATO will continue with a fairly modest contribution in the near term and that political leadership in the coming months will discuss the potential for NATO assuming a greater responsibility in Iraq, Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford told reporters Wednesday after a day of meetings at the alliances headquarters.
Dunford said specific troop levels were not discussed during the meetings, which took place one week before NATO heads of state meet here.
What I just want to do is try to find a way for each country to optimize the contribution they could make, he said.

More "muslims first".
What? 211 years hasn’t been long enough to train the Iraqis on how to fight?
That’s how long it feels we’ve been there.
Last thing McCain said that I agree with was that we should have a VERY STRONG troop presence there for a hundred years.
ISIS et. al. would not have occurred.
Things weren’t great over there by 2009, but they got a LOT WORSE when the US military threat disappeared.
That opinion is separate from my opinion on whether we should have gone in or not.
It is an after the fact situation that had to be addressed.
McCain supported funding and arming ISIS. What the man thinks is of importance because it’s merely more to charge him with sooner or later.
Iraq does not have designs on other nations. It is intent on protecting itself.
I don’t mind advisors in there to help them. They have been making decent headway, and they’ve proven to me they want to defend their nation.
More troops, and more from the Euroweenies. Insane. Utterly insane. The plan is to be there forever.
Afghanistan will always be a waste of money and lives, we should never have gone in and we should get out ASAP.
How is this an item for NATO to consider?
