SCHIEFFER: There are many parallels, uh, to Watergate, but I have to tell you, I think all the way back to the, uh, Kennedy assassination to draw parallels. I was there, as you know. I have always felt if Lee Harvey Oswald had been put on trial, a lot of these conspiracy theories that are still circulating today would have been put at rest then. It is absolutely imperative that Donald Trump find a way to reassure the American people that these questions about Russia are not true, if that is his version. He’s gotta lay it all out. He’s gotta show ’em some proof. He’s gotta give ’em some reason to believe that these things are not true.

He was a communist. If there had been a trial and Oswald has been found… Well, they wouldn’t have allowed Oswald to be found guilty simply because he was a communist. But if he had been? Pfft! That wouldn’t have stopped any conspiracy theories. There would have been still been a bunch of wackos who said he was a fall guy.

“Trump has to prove there’s nothing to these allegations to shut down all this, otherwise the American people…? The American people need closure! The American people need to know that Trump didn’t do it!” How does he prove it, Bob? How would he prove it to you, Bob? What could Trump do to convince you? What would he have to say? What documents would he have to produce? What…? How would he prove it, Bob? He’s denied it every chance he’s got. You guys, who are alleging it, have yet to produce any evidence. It seems to me, Bob, that the onus is on all of you.

To solve a mystery, you must use evidence to determine a credible scenario, then bounce that against what the witnesses say happened. In the JFK assassination, the witnesses NEVER matched the official conclusions.

So the press throws every form of defamation against the wall, hoping against hope that something will stick, and the victim of all that baseless accusation has to prove the negative? That's not quite how it works in America, comrade.

All this Russian conspiracy theory nonsense is so Kafkaesque. How is Trump supposed to prove these wild, amorphous accusations against him are untrue? How about saying the people inventing the accusations should have to present some evidence for their wild charges instead?
I guess our partisan “press” want the whole “innocent until proven guilty” switched for “guilty (even with no evidence) until proven innocent”—for Republicans that is. The leftists in the “press” never consider one of their own on the left guilty even when clear evidence is presented, but they’ll keep a totally unproven conspiracy theory going for months against a Republican without producing a single shred of evidence against him. The extremely arrogant “media” consider themselves to be so much above the president anyway, there’s no need in their minds to play by the same, fair rules for those they hate anyway—and they don’t make any effort at all to hide their hatred of Trump.
How’s that going to work, Bob? In order to raise reasonable doubt, the defense attorneys will raise a thousand different theories and inconsistencies in the evidence. All they have to do is get one juror to believe that the Single Gunman Theory is wrong and they’ll get a mistrial. Every one of those ideas raised by the defense would probably launch its own cottage industry.
