Dang that’s right, maybe it’s Tillis that is up next for reelection here. Hope he is following Trumps plan, haven’t heard much out of him lately.

From the comments:
“Would that be “National Counterintelligence Executive William Evanina” one of the four people being interviewed for intrum FBI director?”

Hold on. In the hearing video at 2:48 Comet said the decision as to what is included in the quarterly report is made by “the head of our counterintelligence division.” Would that be “National Counterintelligence Executive William Evanina” one of the four people being interviewed for intrum FBI director?

The complete lack of interest in this story is why some posters believe FR is but a shadow of its former self.

Here is the thrust of the article.. quoted:

“Again, review that 2:49 second Q & A segment.

Director Comey is admitting to congress that for eight months he did not tell them about the counterintelligence investigation “because of the sensitivity of the matter“.

From his own testimony Director Comey admits he coordinated with: Susan Rice (White House), James Clapper (DNI) and Sally Yates (DOJ Counter-Intel). However, Comey also admits he intentionally did not tell congressional oversight. EVER.

The people within congress who SHOULD HAVE BEEN notified of the counterintelligence operation are the ‘Gang-of-Eight’: (Ryan, Pelosi, McConnell, Schumer, Nunes, Schiff, Burr and Feinstein/Warner) [*note Warner replaced Feinstein in ’17].

Director Comey is openly admitting to beginning an intelligence operation/investigation in July 2016 and intentionally not notifying congress until March 2017. In essence, he is completely operating without oversight.

However, did you hear a single member of the Gang of Eight raise objection to this stunning revelation?

Comey is admitting to keeping the Go8 in the dark. Comey is admitting to intentionally acting without oversight. Did a single member of the Go8 call for his removal? Did they protest this action? Did they demand to know why he felt empowered to violate the checks-and-balances?”

There is a posted comment that is interesting....

“Why didn’t anyone on that committee, after freshman Congresswoman Stefanik’s staggering questions and Comey’s obfuscations and stunning confessions, follow up on the massive, gaping hole she blew open? She is a newbie… but what the hell is wrong with the rest of them?”

Hopefully it will return to the days when we were a huge pack of investigative reporters seeking the truth. The banter chased a lot of good people away.

One would have to way off the reservation to get two thirds vote from either one of the “institutions”.

-- Well he does have a point. Congress can not be trusted to keep a secret. --

But he isn't "obliged" to tell all of Congress, just the "Gang of 8", majority and minority leader in both houses of Congress, and chair and ranking member of the two congressional (House and Senate) intelligence committees.

FBI Director James Comey meets with Congress 'Gang of Eight' - March 10, 2017

"Obliged" in scare quotes because there is a legitimate constitutional separation of powers question about Congress poking around in executive branch business.

This "Ganag of eight" is also supposed to be briefed on covert military actions and assorted other matters.

It's important to remember the purpose of the intelligence committees. In the 1970's, the Church Committee investigated grave abuses of power in the name of national security. One of its core findings was that the complete lack of congressional oversight created fertile ground for executive overreach. It recommended that special committees in Congress be created to keep the intelligence and national security community within the confines of the law.

I'm of a mind that Congressional oversight is a nothing more than a propaganda tool. The oversight is toothless. The NSA, CIA and FBI are essentially rogue to the extent they can keep their activites hidden, which is pretty darn far!

Her question was about general protocol in reporting new investigations to the Go8. Comey replied that in general they were reported quarterly. He then went on to say to say that because of the sensitivity he had not reported it. It would be interesting to know if this was a “normal” exception that was still within protocol, or if it was truly a break with protocol. This analysis, which is very good, assumes the latter but it would be nice to see that assumption nailed down.

You’ve got it.

There are separation of powers questions here that Treehouse glosses over.

Congress, and the (generic) president love these agencies ‘independence’ so no one can really be held accountable while government grows without restraint.

Congress controls the money and can end ‘abuses’ any time. They just don’t want to.

Sundance has many interesting insights, but watch out for his assumptions and factual bases. I was reading an article of his from this past January where he asserts that the Gang of Eight has "approval authority." It has no such thing. All it is "entitled" to is being informed. It is then up to them to decide whether any Congressional action is merited. The chances of a briefing resulting in Congressional action is close to zero.

The nature of the relationship between the "Gang of Eight" and the various parts of the executive branch precludes any meaningful action on the part of Congress. The material shared is the most sensitive of state secrets, or at least that's what we are led to think. The Gang of Eight is sworn to secrecy and will literally break the law if they expose any secrets they have been briefed on.

The point of drawing them into the secrets held by the executive circles is to reduce the chance of Congressional objection - not to invite it.

But, he also announces that in 3 months (when he and his team are cleared), DOJ will assign special prosecutors to examine the lives of every member of Congress.

Are you nuts? Everybody on both sides of the aisle would be screaming dictator, and rightly so. I would be really worried about it as well.
