The Texas Senate has approved allowing concealed carry permit holders to have guns in their locked cars parked outside schools... It is aimed at teachers who have licenses to carry concealed handguns and want to keep guns in their cars while at work. State law bans guns on school grounds.

Back in my day, anyone, including students could have guns in their unlocked and open window vehicles and no one thought a thing about it.

This is common sense. Otherwise you can’t legally exercise gun rights if you work at a school unless you aren’t visiting the school that day.

Exactly. Libs are trying to play this up as some scary extreme position, but I remember kids driving to school with hunting rifles in their cars and trucks all the time during hunting season. All the time. No one thought anything about it.

In the 50’s and 60’s we had guns at schools for a variety of reasons. Usually for hunting after school.

Ditto. Of course that was before a generation of kids grew up with too much money, too little responsibility, and enough time to spawn a generation of bigger idiots. Too bad we can't slow boat them to Australia and enjoy those days all over again.

Same here. We even had a marksmanship club at school (rural Iowa) and competed among ourselves and a couple other local towns schools. Great range time, and the Coach tolerated zero screwing around. As it should be.

Why? Why? Why?

Does Texas hate students?

How many people must die because the Texas legislature makes it convenient for people to shoot up schools?

I bet 95% of school shooters used cars to bring their guns to school. Otherwise, they’d have to run or bike their heavy guns and ammo to school. Why make it easy for mass-murderers? No guns in cars is a clear deterrent to school shootings.

I suppose buses and mopeds are a grey area. And there probably exists the rare boat shooting. But cars are the overwhelming majority. Just say no to guns in cars at schools!

As long as I can remember we Hoosiers have also been able to have guns in cars when picking up our kids at school.

Colorado too though if you get out to walk around to the trunk to lock your gun you are in violation of the law. I have a gun safe under the driver side car mat for those times i have to secure it.
Found out today my doctor and one pa, both female, are fine with me carrying during a visit. Not that they would know unless i had to take my shirt off. My chiropractor, also a female, is fine with me removing my gun in holster and putting it on the stand with my keys.

Virginia has the same idiotic rule over no guns on school property.
It did get amended to if one is picking up his kid and he is otherwise within the law, one can have gun in vehicle in parking lot as long as person in vehicle.

I committed a ‘felony’ at least a few times a week when my two grandsons were playing baseball as I felt the gun in my possession was better than leaving it in my truck with all those ‘teenagers’ prowling the parking lots during games.

My only ‘alternate’ was to leave my gun at home which was also ridiculous so while at the games I was armed as usual BUT breaking laws....

Of course I figure that is why it is referred to as CONCEALED CARRY.

Yeah, in the car here too is OK, outside, no.
But I suppose if a criminal maniac ignores the `gun free zone’ law and begins executing kids, the law might overlook a teacher retrieving his gun to put him down.

I love to walk my dog but have to be careful to not carry too close (1000 yards) to three nearby schools.

A while back at dusk a ginormous black cowardly cur came out of the dark and attacked my smaller dog from behind—went for his throat. I was kicking the beast as hard as I could with Crocs (rubber shoes) with no effect. My boy had some puncture wounds but shook it off.
So now when we have to walk by a school, he’s primed with a wide studded leather collar and I have in my waist pack Kimber pepper spray, a stun gun and a good collapsible baton since the statute specifies, “no firearms”.
The Boy Scouts ruined me for life and his neck is now on a swivel, he still looks around for trouble.
(Quite a story huh? And you thought all you’d get is a “Me too.” ;-)

In other news, I need to buy another gun. I’m very happy with my Springfield XDs in .45, nice ankle carry. But I’m thinking next maybe old school next, the new Colt Cobra—if the insurance and tax guys will stop holding their hands out. God bless Amurica!

Same here.
There was a real nice squirrel woods behind the football field.
No problem locked in vehicle, permission required to put in locker.

I’m really starting to appreciate living in Mississippi - my “Enhanced” Carry Permit says I can carry my concealed weapon into a school.

are you conceal carrying and do you have a TX ccw permit? i think the 1000 ft laws only applies to out of state folks. also in cases of dog and coyote attacks always say I WAS PROTECTING MYSELF FROM PHYSICAL HARM and never say you protecting your pet.
