Dana Point bar sparks furor over 'green cards' and an inflatable wall for Cinco de Mayo
Los Angeles Times ^ | May 7, 2017 | Emily Alpert Reyes

Bar owner Paul Hennessey says he wanted to get people talking.

To mark Cinco de Mayo, his Dana Point bar set up an inflatable wall for patrons to climb over — and handed out “green cards” that guaranteed one free drink to those who clambered to the top.

Since then, Hennessey’s Tavern has gotten angry phone calls. Yelp reviewers have called the Cinco de Mayo event disgusting, tasteless and racist.

Even if he had the worst of intentions, as a citizen it’s his right to voice his take on issues of the day.

I don’t think it was his intent to offend people. It was a lark that should have seen people getting their free beer and attacking or defending the wall.

The writer here is yet one more cupcake who can’t grasp the deeper issues involved here.

One dare say she needs a safe-room, where she can go when life gets, well, real.

Wow, that one FacePlant page got 100 hits. Incredible! /s

More from the article:
Hennessey argues that they are missing the point. “It was our way of protesting the fact that Trump wants to spend billions of dollars to build a wall that is pretty useless,” Hennessey said Saturday.

No, it was his way of trying to drum up business for his bar using a gimmick. It definitely raised his exposure. Time will tell if it ends up hurting or helping his business.

Personally, I think it was a funny idea regardless of his motivation.

I guess Hennessey thinks it’s OK to spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year to educate and incarcerate illegal aliens. Plus the cost of their medical care, welfare, EBT cards, Section 8 housing, the diseases being
re-introduced to America, and the countless Americans being killed and maimed ever year by illegal alien criminals and drunk drivers.

Where there's no will, there's Jose.

I think Hennessey is an intelligent American and a smart marketer. I hope he made a ton of money.

I feel sorry for the proprietor who is competing with
some new and very trendy places to eat in Dana Point.
On any weekend dudes pull into town to enjoy some laid-back beach attitude. I love looking at their expensive Harley’s
and Teslas, etc. I’m positive this crowd was not offended
by a opportunistic promotion. Henny should have checked
with the LA Times first. NOT!
LA ideals should stay in LA.

As a very long time resident of The OC, I say this guy was merely using it as a gimmick to attract attention, and therefore to sell more booze and food.

South OC has been a growth area for decades, with plenty of unskilled and skilled jobs for willing workers.

I worked with a man from Guadalajara that lived in Dana Point, 51 years ago. Gregorio D’Andra was his handle. He would take me to his home where his wife served us delicious authentic food.

Certain blocks in Dana Point and nearby San Juan Capistrano are a bit “barrio.”

All that was missing was a mini Rio Grande that people could cross and become “wetbacks” for the day.
