The New York Times recently reported that President Donald Trump is apparently very upset that Amanda Knox backed Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential race, since Trump had been a vocal defender of the Seattle native when she was imprisoned in Italy after being accused of murdering her roommate. And now, Knox is speaking out, writing in a new op-ed for the Los Angeles Times that she doesnt owe him her loyalty.
Just as a persons support of me should not be based upon my politics or identity, hinging instead on the fact of my innocence, so should my politics hinge on the merits of policy, not personal loyalty, Knox writes.
Trumps frustration with Knox was revealed during a recent New York Times profile on his Italian friend, George Guido Lombardi, where he said the president was very upset with the ingratitude of Ms. Knox, who supported Hillary Clinton. During her imprisonment in Italy, Trump gave television interviews about her and tweeted out missives in support, including one that read, Everyone should boycott Italy if Amanda Knox is not freed she is totally innocent. Knox was exonerated in 2015.
In the Los Angeles Times, Knox writes that Trumps call to boycott Italy while she was on trial only served to amplify anti-American sentiment in the courtroom. She also says that while Trump defended her innocence and recognized that coercive interrogations produce false testimony, he claimed the exact opposite in the Central Park Five case, and continues to view them as guilty even though they were exonerated because of DNA evidence.
Knox goes on to say that the kind of loyalty she actually supports is loyalty to due process, equal protection, freedom of speech, and to vote according to ones principles. But by holding personal loyalty above all else, Trump and his supporters are creating a political environment where reason and justice hold little sway.
She concluded, What do I owe Trump? A thank you for his well-intentioned, if undiplomatic, support. But when it comes down to it, Knox believes that she owes her country civic engagement, consideration of the issues, and support for policies that deserve support even if it makes the president very upset.
Yep
What do I owe Trump? A thank you for his well-intentioned, if undiplomatic, support.
I agreed with most of what she said - until the last few words. She makes it a back-handed slap with that. I doubt that Trump held that much sway regarding the whole thing - this is the first I’ve heard that he had given her any support. But he would have held even less sway if he had been “diplomatic”.
She probably thinks he should have been diplomatic like Carter and the Iranian hostages.
LOLOL
Hillary's supporters have a big problem with hypocrisy.
I doubt most people would really care who Knox endorsed. know I wouldn’t.
Just look at this crap. NYT claims Trump is ‘upset’. really NYT? And the same day, Intl Bsns Times claims that the relationship between Ivanka and Melania is ‘strained’. Right.
They’re ten times worse than the National Enquirer.
Just what I was going to say, guilty as hell as well as the Central park 5 she mentions. These are 5 punks who beat a woman within an inch of her life and then sexually assaulted her in Central park, immediately implicated one another when arrested, bragged about it, yet were awarded $41 million by a piece of rat filth named Bill Dr Blasio. I talked to the leaf Detective in that case, he said they even admitted it with their parents present. And now they’re millionaires. ALL you people who live in New York city, think about that next time you pay your taxes. Thugs are rewarded with your money.
poor liddle rich girl...can’t even break her arrogance with a simple thankyou....
I’m going back and forth between knowing what’s right and feeling a little offended by her remarks. When you believe someone is being railroaded, as I do believe Amanda was, supporting her defense without strings attached is the right thing to do. Still, I’d think she could have found a more gracious way to express her support for a candidate who had the power to help ensure she got a fair trial and instead did nothing, without needing to openly slam the one who emphatically supported her.
Oh yeah, I’m sure Knox wrote this obfuscating op-ed.
*eyroll*
Ed
I'm guessing that Hillary was advised against helping.
“Um - Mrs. Secretary. Seeing as this position is primarily to serve as a platform for your upcoming presidential race - we don't think it would be wise to be involved too closely in this. Remember, we are trying to DISTANCE you from lurid sex stories and mysterious deaths.”
She is from a liberal family from Seattle. There are no people more ungrateful for anything ever. For a conservative to expect any type of loyalty from such a person would be folly. I doubt whether Trump did anything more than mention his amusement.
And a snotty little twit to boot
Me three.
Why do you believe that?
I’m ignurnt
how much support did hillary give her when she was o n trial? I’m guessing ZERO
The First mistake was expecting Loyalty from a Women...
