A Pottawattamie County sheriff's deputy was fatally injured Monday when he was shot at the jail by an escaping inmate.

At a somber 4:30 p.m. press conference, Pottawattamie County Sheriff Jeff Danker identified the deputy as Mark Burbridge, 43, a 12-year veteran.

Danker said the loss of Burbridge was something that law enforcement officers hope they never have to experience.

"We lost one officer today," Danker said. "Two of our excellent officers were shot."

Another deputy, Pat Morgan, 59, a 10-year department veteran, also was injured in the shooting, which occurred about 10:55 a.m. Morgan was shot in the lower torso, an injury that officials said was not life-threatening.

By Creighton? I listened to KFAB and the Pott County prosecuting attorney said the perp had just been sentenced to 45 years and told the mother of the victim that he deserved to die. Piece of $h!+

He should have put up more resistance to save the cost of a new trial, incarceration, and appeals ad nauseum.

Iowa needs to bring back the death penalty. And actually use it. No doubt in this case and obvious aggravating circumstances. Ought to be able to string him up this month. Slowest part of the process should be impaneling the jury.

I thought so, too.

Maybe he tried to commit suicide by cop, but failed.

Iowa needs to bring back the death penalty.

With Republicans finally in control of everything, I would have thought that'd be on the to-do list during this session but, I guess it was already too full.

And, with 2018 being an election year, I don't expect anything "controversial" will make it to a floor vote.

Iowa abolished the death penalty in 1872. A heinous crime wave followed. Since Iowa still had MEN then, a wave of lynchings punished the most heinous of the crimes and the death penalty was reinstated in 1878. Death penalty again removed in the 1960s when Democrats took over.

The Iowa GOP never followed through on promises to reinstate it.

Mrs. DM and I watched the arrest shown on TV this morning and we were very surprised to see a living suspect. Here come the SJW's to his defense. GAHHHHHHH!
