MIAMI (AP) - Marla Dixon was in the final stage of labor and ready to deliver a baby boy when the obstetrician arrived at her bedside at North Shore Medical Center in Miami. It was not a high-risk pregnancy. But over the next 90 minutes, the doctor made a series of missteps that led to a tragic outcome for Dixon and her baby - and a $33.8 million malpractice judgment, according to a federal lawsuit.

More contemptible extortion from the judges, lawyers, and juries. Perhaps people may begin to understand why healthcare costs just keep going higher. What do you suppose was the take for the plaintiffs lawyer? Of course, since lawyers are now running healthcare, I bet they made more than the standard $400/hour.
There are so many things wrong with this story (which I had to track down by copying a link from this no-information “article”). The only positive element is the parents’ attachment to their severely-handicapped child.
Why was this in federal court?
I’m just glad I’m no longer practicing medicine in an atmosphere like this.
Affordable Health Care will never be a reality until unlimited malpractice lawsuits are eliminated from the costs.
Tort reform and putting health insurance on the free market, that’s the only way to get costs down. When obstetricians have to pay a quarter million dollars and up every year for liability insurance, something is seriously effed here and I hope Trump takes action on this.
Because it was a federally-funded medical facility. The U.S. taxpayers paid the doctor who permanently injured Ms. Dixon’s baby and at least two others the same year, and the U.S. taxpayers are paying the $33M award.
In a way, it’s six of one, half a dozen of the other, because the taxpayers would be paying for the child’s care through Medicaid and/or SSI, anyway. However, in this situation, a big chunk goes to the lawyer.

“Affordable Health Care will never be a reality until unlimited malpractice lawsuits are eliminated from the costs.”
That’s the first step to making medical care affordable.
Affordable Health Care will never be a reality, because what people mean by “affordable” is “someone else pays for most of it.”
Third world doctors are also allowed to practice in this country, half of them cant speak the language
Yeah. That's what they all have in their minds when they go to work, rampant butchery. WTF is the matter with you?
And there's no Sword of Damocles. They all have insurance. Insurance is the thing we need to eliminate, and I'm not just speaking of medical liability insurance.

If you want to watch the health care industry grind to an instant halt this is the way to do it.

A miniscule rate of medical docs cause harm inadvertantly. 100% of abortion docs cause death 100% of the time.
Nothing wrong with me my friend, just sharing my life time observations about the practice or mal-practice of medicine. Not all doctors, nurses, and hospital bureaucrats live the Hippocratic oath. The threat of financial harm can help to keep the bad apples in check.
Yes, I love how all the talk about healthcare reform never mentions that, since Congress is overrun with lawyers and the ABA is a powerful lobby.
Tort reform and loser pays would go a long way.
Not sure what you are talking about. There was essentially no medical insurance when I was a child. (I graduated HS in 1964.) My own doctors today would happily continue to see me if I had to pay them directly. In fact, that's how it works for my major area needing medical attention which is my teeth. I see three different guys and I pay them in full myself.
