Context is important, though. Alexander van der Bellen is a leftist (of course) but his position is largely ceremonial and the country’s policy on head coverings is more restrictive than you might think from listening to him. Austria banned full-face coverings like the burqa and niqab in January; the hijab, which covers the hair and neck, is still allowed among civilians but has also been banned among civil servants like cops, judges, prosecutors, etc. Even van der Bellen reportedly supports a ban on religious dress among judges for fear that it’ll raise suspicions about their impartiality and wants to see “clearer statements” from Austrian Muslim groups after European terror attacks opposing jihadism.
It’s a question about the ban on face coverings that seems to have prompted this answer, which begins as a defense of individual expression and multiculturalism and segues in record time into calls for conformity and assimilation — by the majority, to make the minority feel more at home. Nothing unusual about that. If you’ve followed western media’s retreat from reproducing images of Mohammed over the past 10 years, you know how this dynamic works. If there’s a difference between the two situations, it’s in the degree of violence being used to pressure the majority into conformity. Offhand I can’t recall any terror attacks that were justified by the perpetrators as reprisals for “burqa bans,” but every journalist in the western world knows after Charlie Hebdo what’s apt to happen if they don’t mind their manners about Mohammed. Maybe that’s the worst thing about van der Bellen’s plea here — he can’t even claim fear as a justification for suggesting this show of “solidarity.”

Note to the new Austrian President; Mr. Pres. you’re doing it wrong. New citizens are supposed to conform to their hosts, not the other way around. If you start off playing the part of a smiling doormat, it only gets worse. The requests suddenly become shouted demands. Ask Sweden how it’s working for them. All those open doors and open arms. Ask Germany, just do so in private. They have repressive Hate Crime laws too, just like France.
Fighting cultural phobias during wartime is rather silly. We didn’t pander to German-Americans in WWII and put Japanese-Americans in camps. Phobia was encouraged by news propaganda such as the buck-toothed Jap illustrations.
Islam is at war with us and we cannot afford the luxury of fearing to offend them. Let that come, if ever, after we win the war.

The fear of Islamists is NOT “irrational” as the term “phobia” suggests.
A quick study of the history, writings, and recent behavior of Islamists, informs us that all means of subduing “infidels” is both allowed and promoted.
The left is using the “phobia” and “hate speech” labels to silence Christianity and Conservatism.

Islamophobia is an oxymoron. Like a cubic sphere or dry water. To know it is to have a rational fear of it. Fear of Islam is not something to avoid it is something civilized people arrive at by a clear examination of the facts. Islam must be destroyed.
Do you also have the right to fight homophobia by asking people to have homosexual relationships?
How about forcing people to have homosexual relationships?
How about anyone how promotes homophobia by refusing to engage in homosexual relationships shall be executed?

Well said and one of many other things everyone can do is to stop calling Islam a religion. It isn’t a religion. It has never been a religion. It’s the ramblings of some lunatic from the 7th century that became a war manifesto to conquer and subjugate then it morphed into a cult which is what it is today. A dark cult that teaches a battle plan to conquer through any means available including lying and infiltrating. A cell may stay dormant for decades then at a moments notice become active and they are all over the world. Islam sadly has 1.5 billion brainwashed followers. It can’t be defeated using what we consider normal methods. Islam cannot be defeated completely; only turned back or eliminated at the local level.
Just as Al Qaeda and the Taliban went quiet when ISIS arose; so will ISIS when it is defeated in Syria and other parts of the region. It won’t be eliminated; just forced into being dormant. Islam’s followers don’t think in terms of years or decades. It thinks in terms of centuries just like the Chinese have forever which is why the Chinese are so good at keeping Islam at bay in China. It even recently banned the naming of children using Islamic names. Small seeds like a name can grow into great trees if nurtured correctly.
Islam will forever be the mortal enemy of Christianity and Western culture. Probably Hindu’s and Budhists too. Always and forever. One day they may even win with the help of weak feckless weenieless leaders like this one in Austria.
