Veterans Affairs has 346 workers who do only union work
Washington Examiner ^ | Apr 27, 2017 | Sean Higgins

Texas Rep. Jody Arrington has introduced legislation to require VA to track the use of official time.

An estimated 346 employees in the Department of Veterans Affairs do no actual work for taxpayers. Instead, they spend all of their time doing work on behalf of their union while drawing a federal salary, a practice known as "official time."

...

The lack of accountability at the VA when it comes to monitoring official time suggests it might be worse

...

Pointing to the waiting list scandals at the department, Arrington said the official time situation is reflective of the "broken culture at the heart of the VA" and adds, "I haven't heard one good, acceptable reason why the practice has continued.

...

At least 700 federal workers do nothing but work on official time, according to the GAO

...

"Employees spent approximately 1,057,00 hours on official time for union representation activities … In addition, the data show that 346 employees spent 100 percent of their time on official time," the GAO found in a January report.

...

Arrington argues that the practice has to change if the VA is ever to be truly reformed. He has sponsored the Veterans, Employees and Taxpayer Protection Act, which would require the VA to track the use of official time. It also would prohibit employees involved with direct patient care from spending more than a quarter of their work hours on union activities and bar any VA employee from spending more than half of their time on official time.

The legislation would effectively put VA employees under right-to-work protection. The VA would be prohibited from agreeing to union contracts that force workers to join or otherwise support a union as a condition of employment.

How do these people live with themselves when vets are dying waiting for treatment? I really hate unions.

People are naive if they think it only happens at the VA, think of all the other government departments there are where such people hide every day.

And that union work is figuring out new ways to file grievances in order to extort money from the government.

While the GOP has control of both sides of Congress, it would behoove them to start passing (and I mean soon) some bills reining in the labor union rules involving federal employees.

While I’ll admit that I don’t know where these kinds of arrangements came from, I certainly know where they should end: here and now. No way should taxpayers be paying for union activities - that’s what dues are supposed to pay for.

When I’m not coming off putting in an all-nighter at work, I’ll think of some other rules we need to change...legislatively.

Not only at the VA, other US govt departments are hiding the same types........unionists on the govt payroll figuring out ways to file grievances in order to extort more and more money (tax dollars) from the government.

An outrage......must be stopped.

Paychecks and pensions must be astronomical for these union hogs gorging at the public trough. Vouchers these swillers submitted for taxpayer reimbursement can tell a sordid tale.

Regardless of the fact that the 346 people represent less than 1% of the VA employees (298,000+), the practice should be stopped.

Doing work for the union should be a union’s expense, not the employers’ of the union members.

I saw full time union people at Pacific Telephone in 1980. They contributed nothing useful.

Soldiers blood poured out like water in every Muslim civil war just confirms American leadership still has no respect for lives, for the beating hearts of our military forces. They watched people die in Benghazi for hours like a movie.
As the decades of leadership have pawned military lives, so have these folks.

There should be no government unions!

If Trump wants to drain the swamp that is what he will get done.

"Employees spent approximately 1,057,00 hours on official time for union representation activities … In addition, the data show that 346 employees spent 100 percent of their time on official time," the GAO found in a January report.

That comes out to 600 employee years total. Probably higher with all the time off allotted to government employees beyond the 220 employee days in the private sector.
