Exercise keeps dementia at bay: Running and walking 'significantly' boosts brain power

Running, walking, yoga and tai chi have all been shown to “significantly” boost brain power in the over 50s.But experts say almost any exercise leaving you breathless helps with the benefits evident irrespective of the current state of someone’s brain health.

Research by a team of respected Australian scientists confirm what is good for the heart is also good for the brain.

The team behind the remarkable findings said evidence was strong enough to recommend prescribing certain exercises to improve cognitive function.

Professor Joseph Northey, of the University of Canberra Research Institute for Sport and Exercise, said: “The findings suggest an exercise programme with components of both aerobic and resistance-type training, of at least moderate intensity and at least 45 minutes per session, on as many days of the week as possible, is beneficial to cognitive function in adults aged over 50.”

Researchers reviewed the records of 12,820 people in their 50s from 39 trials who were given supervised exercise programmes, including aerobic exercise, resistance training, multi-component exercise, containing elements of aerobic and resistance training, tai chi and yoga.

They found taking up moderate or vigorous exercise improved brain capacity, the ability to process information quickly and memory.

Aerobic exercise, like running, swimming or walking, significantly enhanced cognitive abilities while resistance training, like weights, had a “pronounced effect” on working memory.

I believe that serious sweating exercise everyday can solve a multitude of physical and mental ills.

But, hey, I was always crazy...and it doesn't help me.;-)

As an aside, yoga is great for stretching.

Do it often.

It is NOT exercise.

I love curry. And my cats tell me that I even stink without it.

Seriously though...I think curry is healthy.

Isn't it?

I hear that catching it is even better. Good for the heart.

Of course, I wouldn't know from experience.

I’m not sure I want to live too long but I have a horror of dementia. So far, I’m living my New Year’s resolution of daily exercise. 115 days gone, 2,003 miles on my bike at about 166 hours. Now if I can only keep this up through the Florida summer swelter!

I do turmeric pills..probably not as good as cooking with curry for Inflammation and Alzheimer issues.

I think a lot is based on indian population having low incident rates

Does favoring curry mean the same as currying favor?

I love Indian food...have some good local friends (more like family) who are Indian doctors.

Have to order good curry sauce from Amazon. Or go to Jacksonville.

I think currying favor has its etymology in the "currying of horses"...

I had a horse growing up. My best friend. My true love.

I curried him every day.

There weren't any favors attached though.

I hope I get to spend eternity in heaven currying my horse...and my cats.

That's true love.

I take turmeric pills, too. I think it’s the essential element in curry.

Also, I don’t run because as you get older it’s bad for the knees. But I walk the dogs every day, and work around the place clipping branches, raking, and so on.

My cats say, "I would recognize my Dad anywhere...smell him coming."

I still think I smell better than their litter box.

That said, I guess odors are all relative.

And cats have sensitive senses of smell. Or so I am told.;-)
