Five days before a rampage that left three men dead, Kori Ali Muhammad shot an unarmed security guard who he felt had insulted him at a Motel 6 when he visited a woman at the hotel, police said.
Muhammad shot the guard, 25-year-old Carl Williams, multiple times at close range shortly after 11 p.m., police said — an act that would set off a chain of events leading to Tuesday's mass shooting.
Police say Muhammad gave rare and unusual details about his movements and the killings over several hours of questioning following his arrest, even returning with officers to the crimes scenes and demonstrating his actions.
"As he spoke about the shooting and shooting individuals, he did so in a very callous manner," said Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.

I wonder if they can convict him of the Tuesday killing. Someone stole the murder weapon, so it may not be available as evidence.

Which doesn't change the fact that they obviously have a confession.
Maybe he spilled the beans prior to being read his Miranda rights and after being mirandized he clammed up and asked for a lawyer, and if so does that initial statement become a confession?

That is very speculative and I'm quite sure did not happen here. They interviewed him for hours, and he even took them back to the crime scene. These cops are not stupid enough to have not mirandized him before all that.
Even so, the larger point is that having the murder weapon is not required to get a conviction. You need proof beyond a reasonable doubt that the person is guilty. You can have that without proof of every possible detail.
. One of the sites he visited was a Catholic Charities facility. Because he was black and the agenda driven reporting which could not allow a black muslim terrorist but a “white hater” None of the news reports mention the victims names (which might be Hispanic) rather the color of their skin
Because of the reporting. I’m not clear if all the killings took place there but when it was first reported over the radio that was mentioned; As those leaving that office were murdered and where the murders took place.
