State officials are investigating the theft last week of equipment from a Cobb County precinct manager’s car that could make every Georgia voters’ personal information vulnerable to theft.
The equipment, used to check-in voters at the polls, was stolen Saturday evening, Secretary of State Brian Kemp said Monday.

Why the heck was this equipment in a car on a Saturday evening?! If that’s really when and where it was stolen from...

I agree that paper ballots are preferable.
But, this is probably not a serious theft of voter data. If Cobb County GA is like the counties in Texas, the equipment used were small laptops with card readers to verify the drivers license is for a resident of the county. In most cases the data is password protected, but probably not encrypted. (it may be that the voter data for the entire state is on the laptop, people do move and fail to change address.)
Most likely, the thief thought he was stealing a laptop. Most thieves won’t have a clue how to start what they have stolen. And if the instructions are with the laptop? They are usually pretty badly written.
Yes, there is some potential for abuse of the data. But I don’t think this is a likely source of identity theft.
You can not download info on paper.
Maybe the motive wasn’t identity theft. Who the heck leaves whatever was stolen in a car on a Saturday night?!

Just my suspicious nature, but I’d lay better than even odds on that precinct manager being a Democrat.

Then there is a reason to question why it was not secured.
There are sloppy persons everywhere.
If we treated vote fraud like the treason that it is, made it a capital offense, we’d have a **** of a lot less of it....
I’d bet it was not a theft. I would bet the worker was involved. Jail time? Accessory to a crime.
