I was a Contra. Spirit of Atlanta. Publius posts about Gershwin, we used to play a lot of Gershwin. Look at previous threads.

More great stuff tonight! It’s quite a tribute to his genius that so many diverse artists wanted to sing his songs!

I played the euphonium in high school and college.

Publius and I have been posting back and forth for a long time. I’m impressed with his knowledge of the world of music.

THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

GEORGE GERSHWIN

STRIKE UP THE BAND

FRANK SINATRA: “SOON”

This is lesser known Gershwin from Frank’s radio days, and it’s a Big Band treatment, far removed from the usual Axel Stordahl arrangements of the era.

Frank Sinatra: “Soon”

Jimmie Grier and his Orchestra released a version of “Strike Up the Band” with UCLA lyrics on the Decca label in 1937, but it hasn’t made it to YouTube. This is the B side of the disc. The A side is a wonderful rendition of USC’s theme song “Fight On!” followed by its alma mater “All Hail” which concludes by combining both melodies.
