Cash-strapped Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) was required to pay former President Barack Obama advisor Valerie Jarrett $30,000 to speak at its commencement ceremony until a donor agreed to cover the cost.
NEIU's president declared a "state of emergency" on April 5 amid a budget impasse. Despite the university's questionable financial situation, its Board of Trustees learned during an April 6 meeting about a contract negotiated with Jarrett to pay her a $30,000 speaking fee, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
One board member reportedly called the decision to pay Jarrett "disturbing." State representatives were also concerned about the decision.

Judging by this article, one could conclude that the market for Valerie Jarrett’s words of wisdom is exceedingly limited.

I’ve never heard of honoraria for COMMENCEMENT speeches. These are considered honors for the speaker. Do other institutions pay their commencement speakers??? Never heard of this. Smells of a political favor.
If Ms Jarrett had any honor, she would wave the *fee*.

American Jewish University in Los Angeles paid Hillary $225,000 for a commencement speech on June 24, 2013.
That also smells of a political favor!
I think an institution must be extremely obscure and/or really suck to need to pay for a commencement speaker.
That’s my alma mater right there. Nice. I’ve moved around a lot since graduating but their fundraising letters always seem to find me. My goal is to outmove their letters!
As with publishers, this is one way to filter money to the left.
She could also waive it, if she really cared about the school’s well-being.

Why not just get an American to speak for free. A local National Guard Commanding Office would be a great choice.
