Lots of fake news out there these days and that link to that story may not be timely and old news. Once Trump had his intelligence briefings and saw the results the attack, he changed his policy on Syria and Bashar al-Assad.

That’s my take - Syria wasn’t not his main objective. It was a reset button for the world, and not just a cheap plastic button.

The message to Putin- "get your lap dog in line"

The message to Assad-"Putin can't protect you."

Look. I’ve seen team Trump not only beat the GOP(e), the DNC, he stuffed the Bush’s and left the Clinton machine confused and speechless or uttering well known maledictions.

The man is simply smarter than me. I can’t reliably second guess anything he decides so I’m with him till the happy ending.

I have an answer to that question but the answer is quite lengthy. Maybe I am simply not up to snuff on war/foreign policy:

I was born during WWII but as soon as I could think for myself and heard about the atomic bombs having been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I silently asked myself, “Hiroshima? Nagasaki? Why not Tokyo centered on the ‘emperor’s’ palace?”

Then the Berlin airlift: Thousands of flights, burning tons and tons of gasoline? Why not level Moscow? At that point in time there was not much that Stalin could have done about it if he had survived the leveling of Moscow.

After that came the Korean War when North Korea almost succeeded in running allied troops out of South Korea: The response: Inchon? Why not level Pyongyang, again, centered on the living quarters of Kim Jong Il?

Cuban missile crisis: Blockade? Why not level Havana and then Moscow again....if there was anything left of it after the first leveling?

( Let’s not even mention the geniuses LBJ/McNamara and their micromanaging of Vietnam. You can bomb this but not that. As Patton said, paraphrased, “Those two geniuses are monuments to the stupidity of man. )

Iran hostage crisis: Attempted but miserably failed rescue? As heartless as this may sound, why not forsake the hostages’ lives and level Teheran? Think about it. Had that been done then world terrorism would never have started. The diplomats knew about the dangers and went to
Teheran anyway, such as soldiers, sailors, Marines and Airmen go to war knowing what could happen.

Lebanon Marine barracks bombing: Why not level the entire country of Lebanon?

A few bombs dropped on Tripoli, Libya? Why not level Tripoli?

The first Gulf War: If ever there was moral reason to completely obliterate from the map Iraq it was immediately after the psycho Saddam lit hundreds of oil fields on fire. Instead, we stuck to the RoE. Idiotic beyond belief!

Afghanistan: Yeah, let’s let the Taliban escape into Pakistan. That sounds like a good idea to me! The idiot who came up with the game plan to NOT surround the Taliban should be tried for treason. In addition, why not level Afghanistan? It supplies the world with poppy.

Bombing an airport in Syria: Why not level Damascus or at the very least, level Assad’s living quarters, castle, palace, tent or wherever that might be?

Conclusion:

Human beings are the dumbest animals on the planet. I do not know how far down the chain one would have to search to find living things which are NOT smarter than human beings but I think that scientists, etc, would be embarrassed to find the truth. The answer may lie just above amoeba. Maybe jellyfish are more intelligent than humans.

Humans certainly learn nothing from history. I find us to be too stupid for words.

All of the above happened in one lifetime. What have humans learned after being here thousands of years? Not very much.

Genghis Khan is one of my personal heroes with regard to fighting war but even he made one grand mistake: He let the women and children live so that they could breed more evil.

BS. I can think of at least one benefit without even trying.

Resolve - The understanding from the major powers in the world not to F with the current Administration.

Value: Priceless.

So two days after we said Assad could stay he does the one thing that would make us change our position? That is what you think happened?

What does that question have to do with Russian MiGs? I don't know what happened to change the US's mind, and neither do you. You post some stupid article: Why Firing Tomahawk Missiles At Syria Was A Nearly Useless Response when you don't have a clue to the objective of the attack. If the objective was to deter Syria from using CW the the response seems to have worked. You flail around implying that Putin will just replace MiGs so Assad can continue to use CW. That's your answer.

It doesn't matter what we think precipitated the attack. That die has been cast. The question is whether our attack met its objective. If Syria persists in using airdropped CW then it will have failed and a bigger response will occur.

well he sure gained a lot of respect and political clout from people who’ve been against him for two years if nothing else. They purposely didn’t go for the runways because they’re “hardened” runways and it wouldn’t have done much damage.

I’d say you live in a very small world and have never met a General.
