Even more depressing is the knowledge that there's no going back. There's no way to regain that spirit of ‘76 that made the US so free and we the people so strong and hardworking and brave. At some point (I suppose with the rise of Lincoln's Republicans, the first viable group that saw government as an engine of social change and control rather than a limited, permitted evil) the United States became Prussia. All we can fight about now is whether we're a neocon Prussia or a socialist Prussia.
