June 10, 1964, was a dramatic day in the United States Senate. For the first time in its history, cloture was invoked on a civil rights bill, ending a record-breaking filibuster by Democrats that had consumed fifty-seven working days.

On this day in 1964, Everett Dirksen (R-IL), the Republican Leader in the U.S. Senate, condemned the Democrats’ 57-day filibuster against the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Leading the Democrats in their opposition to civil rights for African-Americans was Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV). Byrd, who got into politics as a recruiter for the Ku Klux Klan, spoke against the bill for fourteen straight hours. Democrats still call Robert Byrd “the conscience of the Senate.”

I wish every person would remember, it’s not the Democratic party, it’s the Democrat Party, and call every journalist, news reader, politician to task for their refusal to state correctly that fact.

Party of slavery, segregation, and murder. And I’m not even taking about 1860s or 1960s.

The slave owning and trading party. The party of the KKK. The party that fought a war to keep their slaves. The party of lynchings of blacks and murders of civil rights workers. The party taken kicking and screaming to keep Jim Crow. The party whose governors blocked the doors of colleges to keep blacks out. And more.
Quite a history of being the blacks’ best friends.

The civil rights act needs to be revisited, for various reasons of government over reach.

There were a couple of provisions of dubious constitutionality, or even more Republicans would have voted for it.
