Liberal Luke Russert Whines Over GOP ‘Stealing’ Supreme Court Seat
Newsbusters.org ^ | April 6, 2017 | Scott Whitlock

Former MSNBC journalist Luke Russert on Thursday unleashed a series of liberal talking point Tweets about the “unprecedented” effort to override a Democratic filibuster of Neil Gorsuch. Russert, who posed as a supposedly neutral journalist during his tenure at MSNBC, also hit Republicans for “stealing” Merrick Garland’s opening at the Supreme Court.

Russert whined, “UNPRECEDENTED-How the #GOP used the filibuster to stop Obama & steal a Supreme Court pick.” Apparently no one informed him of what happened to Miguel Estrada. Nominated by George W. Bush in 2001 to the U.S. Court of Appeals, Democrats filibustered him. True, he wasn't a Supreme Court nominee, but blocking him led to what happened on Thursday.

Additionally, Republicans in 2016 didn’t use the filibuster to stop Garland. They simply didn’t bring his nomination up for a vote. Later, Russert tweeted, “Obama's pick Garland, can't even get a hearing. UNPRECEDENTED never seen in #USA history.”

This ignores the Democratic support for not considering a nomination during a presidential election year. In 1992, then-Senator Joe Biden gave a speech declaring, “Once the political season is underway, and it is, action on a Supreme Court nomination must be put off until after the election campaign is over.”

In 2008, Russert reported that the “smartest” college kids natuarlly favored Barack Obama. (He later apologized and said he misspoke.) Russert suddenly resigned from MSNBC (and journalism) in the summer of 2016. Clearly, he’s still the same liberal cheerleader.

Gotta admit, if this had happened against us, I would not be a happy camper.

It happening against the Democrats, after what they have been pulling for the last few decades, is simple a token of payback, and believe me, it doesn’t even make a dent in the down payment.

The difference between Garland and Gorsuch is that Obama had already appointed two justices, and he’d be replacing an originalist judge with someone who believed in a “living, breathing Constitution.” Trump is getting his first justice, and he’s replacing Scalia with someone who agrees with him.

How can the Republicans “steal” something they already owned?

Yeah. Not quite, but partial payback for Bork. Even after Gorsuch, they're still owed for that.

Scum.

But we wouldn’t be whining like a 12 year old about a “stolen” seat. We’d be trying to figure out how we lost Congress and the White House and arguing amongst ourselves if we should move towards the middle or move right and hope the nation wises up.

The "living, breathing Constitution" is leftist Newspeak for a "dead Constitution."

I don’t think that’s out of line reasoning.

What is interesting though, is that we found ourselves by going solid principles, in effect moving right ourselves.

We “stole” the seat? Just what were Obama and the Dems. trying to do when they had Scalia murdered?

If the Supreme Court acted like a judicial body, rather than an unelected and unaccountable second legislative branch; it would make little difference which party appointed jurists.

That is the new talking point. I’ve heard it all over the place today. “TRump stole the supreme court.”

Luke discuss your problems with Joe Biden and Harry Reid.

Other than that...I fart in your general direction.
