NICS checks in the Trump Era: March 2017 Near Record

The NICS checks for March, 2017 were 2,433,092.  That is the third highest number of NICS checks for any March. The highest was in 2016, with 2,523,265. The second highest February was in 2014, with 2,488,842.  Both of those were driven by fear of strong gun control measures that might be passed by President Obama.

The Trump era of the National Instant Criminal Background  Check System  (NICS) checks has finished its first quarter. There have been four presidents that have had NICS checks done while they were in office.

There were two years and two months of NICS checks under President Clinton.  They totaled 18,574,000 checks.  During that period the NICS system was clarified.  Court challenges restricted how the checks were done and how long they could be stored.

They were done for the full eight years of the two terms of President Bush, totaling 77 million checks. 34,533,772 in the first term and 42,876,236 in the second term. The numbers surged after 9/11.

They were done for the full eight years of the two terms of President Obama, totaling 157 million checks. 64,490,694 in the first term, and 92,742,463 in the second term. Numbers reached new records as several restrictions on gun ownership and sales circulated among the states and were championed by the Democrat party and President Obama.

It was anticipated that firearm sales and NICS checks would drop with a Trump presidency. It has not happened as expected.

NICS checks remain unexpectedly strong under President Trump.  January 2017 NICS were 80% of January 2016 NICS.  February 2017 NICS were 85% of 2016 numbers. March of 2017 is very close to previous records. It is over 96% of the record set in 2016, and just short of 98% of March, 2014.

I think the sales have not lessened because the insane actions of the left in trying to delegitimize our President and their rejection of Constitutional power because they didn’t get their way. People realize there is something brewing, and not buying guns and ammunition when you have the opportunity is a bad idea, frankly.

Don’t trust them - ever. One day, one day you will have to shoot at them and you’d better hope you have a weapon.

So the apparent surge in numbers of applications to purchase weapons is NOT primarily being fueled by disgruntled Social Justice Warriors who have developed a newfound taste for resorting to firearms (which they claim to despise) for “personal defense”.

Watch for the changes in the demographics of those showing up for firearms training, or the creation of a number of new shooting ranges that appear to cater to a different clientele.

Having firearms is of little use unless you gain and maintain proficiency in their use and sharpen up accuracy.

They will suffer buyers remorse in little time.

And then the opportunity for the secondary market will be fun for us that like to take advantage of deals.

Idjits...

Actually, I don’t think SJWs have enough resources to equip themselves in arms or ammunition in numbers worthy of consideration.

They can’t even get their worthless degrees without ‘school’ loans or whatever. Their biggest weapon now is the massive bleat of discontent and vehemence they show. I cannot recall any instance wherein a gun was involved other than some BS ‘armed’ protest out west somewhere and that was not any group to worry about, frankly.

No, but now those who did NOT want to buy guns when Hillary-Obama ATFFBIDOJ were in power and USING the background checks to create their national registry WILL come forward and buy weapons with less fear of the feds.

Prices for MSRs are at historic lows. S&W is offering a $75 rebate on M&P Shields. Ammunition is plentiful and in some cases being sold below cost.

Federal and Remington have announced layoffs.

If you ever wanted to buy, now is the time.

I was in a local gun store, Sprague’s the other day.

They had about a dozen used, like new AR-15 clones, for sale. A couple with 16 inch barrels were offered at $399.

Most people buy during the panic and then relax. This is such a good time to be picking up ammo, firearms, accessories, and training.

So much training is out there it’s hard to pick and choose.

I’m geeked because while I bought several guns during the panic, I’ve shifted over to buying more training and this summer have the opportunity to take my 15 year old daughter to a 2-day tactical class from the guys who first introduced me to tactical shooting 18 years ago. They’re about to retire and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime father/daughter opportunity to get my daughter trained up and confident in running the M&P 9mm I’ve been holding for her when she finally is old enough to own it in her own name.
