A 6-year-old girl described as a phenom by her dance teacher has already lost one leg to an unusual strep throat infection, and is now in danger of losing the other. Tessa Puma, of Akron, Ohio, was treated for strep throat in early March, but came down with the flu last week, Fox 25 reported.
On Friday, her left leg began to swell and she was taken to Akron Childrens Hospital, where doctors discovered necrotizing fasciitis, Fox 8 reported.

Prayers for her recovery and resilience.
I wonder if such strep throat infections are coming in from other countries? I have never heard of such an infection causing infections in other parts of the body.
I think this is a very rare occurrence. Only about 1,000 cases in the USA per year. The weird thing though, is that another child in the area also developed this within the last 2 months!!! Very scary!
I am starting to wonder. With all our “diversity”, esp. in certain liberal enclaves, if we are collecting garbage from hellholes.
This CY has been hell for our private school. Started with a stomach flu traced to a ski trip - but then we got 2nd rounds and then warnings about strep and influenza which also hit our grade and the whole school. (Our son had 2 bouts of stomach and 1 of some respiratory thing in 5 wks.)
It occurred to me we have “diverse” people in our class as well as the whole school, and even in the midst of this 1 of son’s classmates went “home” to India. Also we have China, etc.
Prayer offered.
We used to have homemaker-moms who scrubbed and cleaned everything everyday.
There's bound to be more contagious activity. Even boys hug now days.

Oh yeah, left untreated strep can severely damage your kidneys. It has been discussed by forensic medical specialists who resd through journals that given the short time span and the onset of the illness - Mozart may have died from a strep infection.
When I was young I would get strep throat every year it seemed. The doc would swab my throat and then put me on whatever medication (probably a antibacterial) and I would be fixed up. I think in third world countries it’s very serious concern but ever since the advent of penicillin and other drugs that can take care of the strep infection it hasn’t really been an issue. But it is a very serious illness especially if left untreated.
Prayers up accompanied with a heads up for everybody else.

Do you suspect the parents of the 6-year-old may have neglected treatment, so it got worse? From what you wrote, it looks like medical treatment was neglected. Maybe the coughing was not bad enough to take action. It may have been a fast acting form of the infection not ordinarily found in this country—something that came in elsewhere.
So sorry for this little one. Prayers for her healing and may her dancing continue somehow. With God there is a way.
Oh No! That is not the case at all! The father was diagnosed with Strep and treated. Then the rest of the family was tested. Tessa tested positive and received antibiotics. After a few days, she developed flu symptoms and they took her to the ER where she tested positive for the flu. Then she started having pain in her leg and arm. They immediately took her to the ER again. That poor kid.
Where is a good epidemiologist when you need one? One who will be allowed to tell the truth.
Poor kid. Prayers for her.
Prayers coming. Give hugs for us. Let mom and dad know we are a pretty rowdy bunch, but very sincerely sorry.
Strep is nothing to mess around with.
It can also cause PANDAS, PANDAS mimics autism but can happen to children at an older age,

It used to be strep caused a sore throat and was easily cleared up with a course of antibiotics rare complications.
Actually our school is very outdoors. Maddeningly so, sometimes. Almost every day the (younger!) kids have to walk outside to another class (gym, music, etc) in different buildings. Never mind most grades have to walk to lunch outside, every day. It’s crazy because one always has to worry about what the weather will be like all day; coat choice is crucial!
I mean after school care and daycare and group activities. Kids used to spend more play time at home.
I can remember that infants were not taken into public at all. They were untouched by strangers until they were no longer infants.
(And no hugging, lol.)
Sometimes for a parent it’s hard to tell if it’s just a sore throat or something more serious. Do people go to the doctor for every sore throat
We take our GS if will realize he has a sore throat but that’s because he is seven and non-verbal so it’s hard to know what is going on.
