Yes, I’d be surprised at that, too.

Another article I read said the victim was a “compassionate educator”.
Is that a step up from a paraeducator? What about an empathetic educator? Semi-concerned educator? homeopathic educator?

I can’t comment on the legal questions as I’m not familiar with the laws there. But morally, I’m having a hard time with this.

It was not his home.
Right. It wasn't the home of the guy who got shot. So how does that make him the "victim"?

How would you like to have a para-educator ...Hey, paralegals do a lot of lawyers' nuts and bolts and boilerplate work. I think I'd call the cops instead of shooting, although if it was a lawyer...

“But I DO know typical, formulaic media BS and spin when I see it.”
In fiction writing they teach you to either play to the character or to play against it; A kindly priest, or a real b*stard. What I’ve noticed in the descriptions of certain types of perpetrators they use stock phrases and positive sounding adjectives. Trayvon was “aspiring” and shown as a really nice kid when the news readers knew he tweeted about beating people up for fun and had a relative who tweeted back that he wanted to learn to do that. Not a word of this graced any of the descriptions. The “white” shooter was portrayed with negative words and in the worst possible light. Little was said about him helping black people in the neighborhood.

This happened less than 15 miles from our home - the shooter made a really bad move and will be charged with first degree murder, according to the local news. What I can't figure out is what the dead guy was doing down near Belfair when he works, and I assume lives in Bothell, which is about 80-90 miles away.
I had a car burgling nasty drunk on my porch at 3AM say he was going to kill me (1987) while I aimed a 1911 Colt at his face. After seeing how intoxicated he was, I pushed him down the stairs, called the cops and they grabbed him up. Turned out to be the neighbor's idiot son whom I didn't know. His father later thanked me for not shooting him, and I'm glad I didn't.

“Spurling said Fanning was checking on a house he uses for operating an Internet-based business on East Trails End Road in Belfair, when he found that the front door had been forced open and discovered Rosa using the shower inside. The homeowner owner ordered the man to leave.”

Well, according to the linked article:
The homeowner, Bruce Fanning, 59, later told investigators that he didn't know the intruder.
Fanning said he thought the man was drunk. Fanning told investigators that he was afraid, according to court documents.
He went to his home next door and got a .45-caliber pistol. He returned to the other property, saw the intruder was still there and shot Rosa three times through the shower curtain, court documents say.
So, who did own the home?

Im all for the Castle doctrine and all that. Hang in there, doesn't sound like the doctrine is at risk.
It is reported that the property wasn't the homeowner's residence. Technically, he wasn't a "homeowner" but a mere property owner.

Wait till the goof gets out of the shower & then pepper spray from head to foot & everywhere in between. Then call the cops.

may simply have been confused and in the wrong house by accident Seriously? There were two break in points from what I've read about since this story came out. They are really reaching here..

He must have fallen into the house through a hole in the roof. That led directly into a shower, so he figured why not take a shower as long as he’s there.
