If you were bright -- and gifted in science and engineering -- the H-1B visa was your ticket to the United States. But maybe not for long.
The lottery for such high-skilled" worker visas opened Monday, with the 85,000 slots expected to fill in a matter of days. Nearly three-quarters of the visas are expected to go to Indian workers, as they have in recent years.
But the Trump administration injected new uncertainty into the H-1B visa process Monday -- warning employers against discriminating against U.S.-born workers and announcing site visits to companies that employ a high ratio of workers on H-1B visas.
President Trump, who campaigned on an "America First" ideology, has promised to "end forever the use of the H-1B as a cheap labor program" and require companies to prioritize American job applicants -- "no exceptions."
Trump has also said he would issue an executive order to investigate visa abuses. That order has not been signed.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions said while campaigning for Trump that he would consider eliminating H-1B visas altogether -- which would be a major blow to tech companies that rely heavily on foreign workers.
On Monday, the Justice Department warned that hiring practices that discriminate against Americans violate federal law.
"The Justice Department will not tolerate employers misusing the H-1B visa process to discriminate against U.S. workers," said Acting Assistant Attorney General Tom Wheeler in a prepared statement. "U.S. workers should not be placed in a disfavored status, and the department is wholeheartedly committed to investigating and vigorously prosecuting these claims."
Hours later the Department of Homeland Security announced new steps to combat H-1B visa fraud and abuse. The department's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will make unannounced site visits to companies that have a high ratio of workers on H-1B visas,

Hey, my experience is that Indians are pretty smart. Plus, they are a strong ally.
It’s been legal so why not? Indians are smart and they all go to school here. Once here and graduate, their new employer applies for a green card. The guy then can’t change his job or he has to start the whole green card process all over and get in the back of the line. And companies don’t pay non-green card holders nearly what they pay others.

Companies like Tata make Billions off these H1-Bs. Basically they are skimming the salaries of the workers they bring in. There is no reason that India should be so dominate. If workers don’t come from all over we should have fewer H1-Bs.
I believe the H1-B program is good for American companies. But not good if Tata has all the visas, so they can skim part of the pay checks.

Yup, many of them are very smart, but like all populations, they have their share of complete morons.
I hope that Mr. Trump severely restricts these H-1Bs though. Quite a number of my friends have been laid off to make way for H-1B replacements at cheaper wages.
Also, many of our programmers get laid off and the work goes out of the country altogether and then we have to deal with discussing things in India with people who barely understand English over the phone or on Skype meetings at all hours of the day and night.
Smart ... doesn’t equal quality work, especially in the area of software development. At least that’s what I’ve seen personally.
If these extremely wealthy Indian companies want to set up shop in the United States and do business here, they ought to be able to find American workers to employ. Hey, it’s my experience that Americans are pretty smart, and America is a strong ally of India.
If the India quote for H-1B is 85,000, then how is it that in 2015 they issued 275,000?
Can we fire the excess and send them all back to India?
You have never worked in tech with them then. If they are upper caste they are lazy at best and thieves by nature. They will try and take credit for work they were never capable of. Show up late and leave early to make up for it
Six months after my company outsourced to India, laying off Americans in the process, the call went out to the remaining U.S. workers to work off hours to clean up their code.
Evey H-1B Indian that I know personally who managed to become a citizen is a flaming socialist liberal.

Bingo! My experience in technical and legal careers.
I work with them in the semiconductor industry.
They are arrogant, socialist, and anti-2nd Amendment.
I’ve grown to despise them.
And I can’t stand seeing them at every park when I’m on vacation.
THey are just as smart as any other nationality.
A lot of the STEM schools over there are lousy. Some are good. Just like here. Difference is, at this point, our kids are not graduating with STEM degrees - because of laziness but also because a STEM degree used to translate into a decent IT/Engineering job but these days it does not ... due to H1B and offshoring.
My thought here is, as much as I know the H1B program is horribly abused (in IT since the 90s, seen it all and currently work for an IT fortune 100 company) is that if the H1B is thwarted here it will just force more offshoring - jobs never created in the USA but created in India or the Philippines instead. Those jobs no one ever had a crack at here in the US.
