It is hard to believe, given that the Nazi term Lügenpresse has recently been repopularized by the far right, but the media has never been as trusted in Germany as now, a new study claims.
Every Monday in Dresden, angry demonstrators march for the anti-Islam movement Pegida, holding up signs denouncing the mainstream media as the Lügenpresse (lying press) for its alleged covering up of crimes committed by immigrants. The term Lügenpresse was a favorite description of Hitlers propagandist Joseph Goebbels for the non-German press.
But an annual study conducted by the University of Würzburg last week shows that German trust in the media actually went up sharply in 2016.
A total of 55.7 percent of respondents said they trust the print press, a drastic rise on the 45.7 percent of respondents who gave that response in 2015, and the highest level of trust since the survey was first conducted in 2000.
On the other hand, 38.8 percent of Germans still say they do not trust the news they receive from the print press.

Guess that explains why they fell for the short dude in the moustache.
This is the same country that thought Adolph Hitler was the bee’s knees. They are easily fooled.
More lies. Ever bigger lies. They learned well from their mentor, Göbbels.
Schaf.
lol
Hard to get a lower opinion of Germans at this point.
Wow.
Seriously, that’s one thing I’ve found that separates Americans from just about every other nationality.
We have an inborn skepticism about government and our other institutions. Even Canadians seem far more willing to roll over and accept something just because the Government tells them so.
My first thought was that this is a made up poll, then I had second thoughts given that Martin Schulz, someone even more radical than Merkel is leading in the polls.
Germans are easily led by a good propagandist.

I think the Germans are like dogs.
They need a good master to control them.
Really, really stupid people. Its incredible how such technologically inventive people grown to be the dumbest nation in Europe.
For weeks up to and even after the election, they would (in the "Entertainment" section) ask that week's Hollywood interviewee - as a last question to "top off" the full-page interview - what they "felt about Trump." Unerringly, some trite, intellectually vapid, and often vulgar response was made. Then came the last line: "We thank you for the interview."
That was bad enough, but then in February they stated - categorically - that D. Trump had, in fact, meant to ridicule a disabled report.
I know it may seem like a minor point, but for me, that was the breaking-point.
Regards,
It's like those US pollsters who first predicted Trump's defeat and even today say he wasn't elected.
Why? Because they ask only the people whose answers they want.
Hitler wanted you to destroy the Jews and Merkel wants you to Love the Muslims
Another “study” trying to convince people of something for political purposes - it’s almost to the point of “why do you bother? We’re not listening anymore”.
“It is hard to believe”!...........
Yes, the author(s) said a mouthful when they made that statement. Believing ANYTHING coming from a “newspaper” is indeed hard to believe. Guess the German’s still believe in Hitler’s propaganda methods.
>>After faithfully reading the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung für 35 years....<<
And Frankfurter Allgemeine is a relatively right wing newspaper, at least by German standards.
Try reading a page or two of Der Spiegel without hurling, if you think you have a strong stomach.
Germans have a prominent fascism gene that they really have trouble suppressing.
Great comment. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
