INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly announced he will support the nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch for his Supreme Court seat.
The announcement came Sunday afternoon in a decision that differed from many other Democrats who opposed the nominee.
Donnelly said in a statement:
I have said consistently that part of my job is to carefully review, debate, and vote on judicial nominations, including nominees to the Supreme Court. It is my obligation as Senator to consider the qualifications of each nominee that comes to the Senate floor to determine if he or she can faithfully serve on our nations highest court. I take this responsibility very seriously. After meeting with Judge Gorsuch, conducting a thorough review of his record, and closely following his hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, I believe that he is a qualified jurist who will base his decisions on his understanding of the law and is well-respected among his peers.
Looks like Schmucky's filibuster is fizzling.
What do we need, 3 more?
It’s a trick to goad the pubbies into NOT using the “nuclear option”...
They have to allow some of the 10 most vulnerable Dems to peel off if they want to avert a 60 Seat Republican majority.
I doubt the Dems want to die on this particular hill.
The next one is way more important to them. That is the one that potentially changes the make-up of the court.
Yep, premature posturing at this time. The next SC nomination is pivotal.
He also is looking to the future when Ginsberg is replaced. If the Rats force the nuclear option on Gorsuch, they won’t have any leverage for her replacement.
You mean in addition to McLame and Susan? Those two closet tards will vote against him if it stops Trump. There ain’t no doubt about them.
We have 52 + 3. We need five more
Schumer has lined the sacrificials in order to save the filibuster for the next Scotia opening.
He makes the 3rd, so 5 more to give them 60 to avoid a filibuster.
That old bat McKaskill has it right: this is “Scalia for Scalia”, next time it will be “Scalia for Ginsburg”, and they’re scared witless about that.
Thanks, I thought there were already 4 and he made 5.
When Nazi Pelosi forced through the Obamacare bill, she kept all the "conservative" Demoncrats at her side until the issue was no longer in doubt, then let them vote "no". The idea was to allow them to go back to their conservative districts and tell everyone that they voted conservatively.
Now we have Demoncrat senators who are trying to save their seats - I expect there will be three or four more who will vote to end the filibuster. As long as Schumer has more than 41 to sustain the filibuster, he will let the others vote any way they want to vote.
I only hope it works as well for the red-state Demoncrats as well as it worked for the "blue-dog" Demoncrats with the Obamacare bill - almost all of them lost even though they voted against the bill (right Bart Stupak?).
Nuke the filibuster for all judges NOW. There won't be a "price" to be paid in the future if/when the Demoncrats take back the Senate and the WH. The Demoncrats would have already hit the nuclear trigger. Only the stupid party still harbors fantasies of comity and genteelness.
I hope the Democrat filibuster holds. We have a much better chance of getting the Republicans to invoke the Reid Rule and nuke the filibuster this time around.
If the Democrats don’t filibuster this time then they will have a much better chance of getting 3 RINOs to wimp out of nuking the filibuster when Trump is replacing Ginsburg or Breyer with a conservative.
“The Demoncrats would have already hit the nuclear trigger.”
Damned right they would have on Garland. Tim Kaine said in no uncertain terms (when the polls were showing a Hillary blowout win in October) the dems were planning to go nuke on getting Garland confirmed. But... thankfully... reality intervened.
“After reminding Senator Schumer that I’m from Indiana and Indiana went solidly for Trump and the vice president is from Indiana, he gave me permission to vote for Gorsuch.
The decision is Schmucky’s, not this guy’s. He has 7 votes he can give to vulnerable dems, and this guy got one. Schmucky may or may not decide to proceed with a filibuster. He has to decide whether to satisfy his base or keep his powder dry for the next one. If he decides to filibuster, he will let 7 Dems support the nomination and the other ones will stay in line. It’s a game, similar to the Republican game of repealing Obamacare only for show.
I predict that Gorsuch will be more like John Roberts than Scalia. We’ll see.
Once you eliminate the filibuster, having 60 like minded senators no longer matters.
