I think it’s the opposite. The Democrats want to shut this down quickly because the focus of the investigation is slowly turning to the illegal surveillance/unmasking matter.

They’ll keep this going for the entire term. Precisely! The strategy is to create doubt and discord. It will die down to a simmer once people figure out that there's nothing there, but they'll keep it in the background ready to fire it up when their lefty communist candidates step forward in 2020.
