For the third time that day, Akili lit up and launched into a conversation he’s been having daily, with strangers and friends alike. The 68-year-old community organizer waved his hands in the direction of his new bank about five blocks up Crenshaw Boulevard: OneUnited, the largest black-owned bank in the country.
“I’ve been trying to convince as many people as I can to open up accounts with black banks and invest in our own community,” Akili said, recounting the recent interaction. “I talk about this almost every time I use my card.”
This new card is part of a rescue effort for black banks that was launched with much fanfare last summer. But the campaign is going to need heroic measures if it is really going to save black financial institutions.

And I suspect their bank may go the way of Cypress and you may find a 0.00 balance in your account if the decide to redistribute the wealth. Let’s justsaythey don’t have the best reputation when it comes to theft, burglary, and robbery, especially in government positions where they just do it on a much larger scale.
I’ve dealt with one of these in the past; not only can others bank there, but they’ll try to force you to do so (to support the black community).
I’ve seen enough Judge Judy, and heard enough complaints from my black co-workers, to know that doing any business based solely on skin color is a losing proposition.
1. Asian: they sure can and do cuz they all work and therefore have money to put in a bank. When they get enough they get together and buy real estate.
2. Whites: they also can because they get an education so they can afford rents then home prices in the state.
3. Hispanics: not a chance. They move in with relatives, take low paying jobs, then go back down south. They then return north when their funds allow. They are the yo-yo factor.
Groups one and three are politically conservative. I know the third group VERY well.
The second group is split down the middle. Those for Clinton really believed her when she campaigned with: [paraphrased] "Unwanted pregnancies are a health issue. The government should therefore pay for the abortion."
Those who voted for Trump didn't want another Clinton NEAR the White House. Who can blame them?
OneUnited Bank - 3 branches in Boston, one in Miami, and one in Los Angeles. Original name - The Boston Bank of Commerce (founded 1982). Name change 2002. I’ve seen banks in worse shape financially. (It made a profit for all of 2016, but lost money the last quarter of the year). But regulators have been known to go easy on minority banks.
Citizens Trust looks a little stronger.

Who the hell ever got the idea to form a “black” bank? A bank cannot be black.
The only reason why they were able to form a “black” bank is that everyone knew the “black” bank would be getting extra help from Whitey.

I remember a ‘black’ bank in Nashville when I was growing up. I wonder what happened to it.

Here in Seattle we had a black bank, Liberty Bank. It existed from 1968 to about 1988 and then closed due to massive fraud.
It sat on a valuable property whose owners seek to build a project with shops and condos, but the black community keeps fighting to preserve the site with abandoned houses, garbage and drug deals. They consider Liberty Bank to be a historic site even though it demonstrated the community’s lack of business acumen and corruption.
I have no problem with him doing this. It’s way more positive than the crap that social justice pimps push. I wish him success.

Eddie Murphy: Tell me, do you know of any other banks like this in this area?
Imagine if whites got their act together and stopped putting up with this BS. It seems like the 20-30yr old white guys are seeing through this.
Now do i support investing in the local neighborhood. Absolutely. But to many times it become just a con for a scam artist
