Landlord Fergus Wilson defends 'no coloured people' ban over curry
Sky News ^ | March 29, 2017

A buy-to-let tycoon facing a public backlash over his ban on "coloured" tenants has said: "I would do it again."

Fergus Wilson has banned "coloured" people from renting his homes because he claims they leave them smelling of curry, costing him thousands of pounds after they leave.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission has pledged to investigate the matter.

Mr Wilson insisted he was "not racist" and said his move was an "economic decision".

He said his stance was no different from his ban on letting his properties to smokers and dog owners.

The 69-year-old said: "There has been much support for the stance I have taken. I do not apologise for it. Faced with the same circumstances, I would do it again."

His ban came to light in a leaked email listing Mr Wilson's instructions to a letting agent for potential tenants, including: "No coloured people because of the curry smell at the end of the tenancy."

The landlord, who owns hundreds of properties in Kent and is thought to be Britain's biggest buy-to-let investor, has also banned plumbers from renting his homes - claiming he had been ripped off in the past.

He said he was happy to rent to "negroes" as "they haven't generated a curry smell at the end of the tenancy".

I can’t imagine that it would be that difficult to get rid of curry smell. A good painting and carpet cleaning should do it.

I have a friend who owns apartments in SoCal. He says if he could, he would only rent to Japanese and Korean women.

Quietest, cleanest group on the face of the earth. Pay their bills on time too. He would give them a big discount.

He asks - why shouldn’t someone financially benefit because of their positive behaviors?

and why shouldn’t someone be free to use their property totally according to their own wishes?

I’ve lived next door to two sets of people from different parts of Africa. I know the man is probably referring to Indians, but “coloured folks” from abroad do like their spices. and I imagine the odours do get embedded. It’s his property so I support him in whatever way he would like to choose his tenants. Of course those kind of rights and freedom won’t fly with communists.

Total strip, prime and re-paint. Strip and replace all padding and carpet. Clean all air ducts. I was a residential real estate agent and appraiser for some years. I could smell curry molecules before entering the front door. A goodly number of the properties would transfer to another Indian and I guess they didn't care. Other ethnic groups have their own odiforous idiosyncrasies. With Vietnamese, its fish. With Koreans, its cabbage and garlic. With Negroes, its fried chicken grease and weed. Frankly, I don't blame this Brit one bit.

The Vietnamese who cook with various fish sauce products had problems selling their houses in my town years ago. The houses stunk even when sitting vacant for several months.

The smart ones learned and started cooking with that stuff in the garage with the car door open.

many years ago the missus worked retail.
a certain ethnic group would buy nice things, wear them to an event then return them claiming “we didn’t wear it, we changed our minds”
each time the garment STUNK of curry. Hey, the customer is always right, so store policy was to take the return.
total loss to the retailer.

I’ve had Punjabi (Indian) friends back in HS and still in touch with them.

It’s TRUE. They wreak of curry.

Don’’t get me wrong, they’re still in my circle of friends but the times I went to their houses, the curry was seeping through the walls and I could smell the curry at the street.

While shopping for a new house, one I viewed was owned by a wealthy Indian businessman. In addition to the main kitchen was what they called a “spice kitchen”. More or less a mud room turned into a kitchen isolated from the rest of the house for cooking stinky stuff. The house did not smell like curry, but the spice kitchen would knock you over.

“He says if he could, he would only rent to Japanese and Korean women.”

I had 2 Korean neighbors on top of me in my apt many years ago. The previous tenants when they party, it shook my roof and told them to F off. The Koreans would invite massive people to their apartment and I SWEAR I never even hear the music. I thought to myself, are they attending a funeral or a party?

Could have said, “No Pakis because of the curry smell”.

IIRC it’s pungently different from the curry aroma at your local Indian restaurant.

Lord knows I love curry but those who eat it 3X/day are *rank*, even their cars reek of it.

OTOH, you never see curry-eaters as patients in hospitals and in their native lands are out farming everday in their 90s.

No, and the reason why is to properly cook with curry, you ‘roux’ it in ghee or oil to bust out the flavor and fragrance. Those atomized oil/curry particles layer everything with the equivalence of fried chicken grease which forms patinas over everything. You need heavy-duty de-greasers like Easy-Off or Scrubbing Bubbles over every inch of exposed space.

Big problem with taxis in NY with the curry smell, too.

Tumeric and Curry are beneficial for health, but offensive to many... as is cat urine and fumes from cooking meth.
