Baltimore's Democratic Mayor Catherine Pugh has vetoed a bill that would have raised the city's minimum wage to $15 an hour.
The unprecedented veto of a "Fight for 15" wage bill by a Democrat points to the growing evidence from other cities that the economic damage caused by a $15 an hour minimum isn't worth the job losses and economic slowdown that results from the increase.
The council meets April 3 and could overturn the Mayor’s veto with support from 12 of the 15 members. It is unlikely that the council will veto the Mayor’s decision, with the Baltimore Sun reporting that the coalition of supporter for the bill crumbled.
In 2016, former Democratic City Council President Bernard Young warned that any initiative to raise the city’s minimum wage to $15 an hour could cost new jobs.
Young asserted that a $15 per hour wage would hurt the city of Baltimore. “Maybe now is not the time for us to be doing this,” Young said at the time, warning that the business community was monitoring the situation closely.
Such a wage increase should occur at a statewide level, Young argued, and not in the city by itself.
Recently elected members of the Baltimore City council supported veteran council member Mary Pat Clarke’s proposal to raise the city’s minimum wage to five dollars higher than surrounding communities, ignoring some longtime Democrats who have warned that such an increase could discourage new business opportunities for the city.
Clarke argued that a $15 wage provides “justice for the working people who have worked so hard to build this city and can’t earn enough at their jobs to make ends meet.”
Former President Barack Obama proposed an increase to the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $9.00 an hour in 2013..

Good for her...
Good for the Baltimore citizens and the city.
High five to one democrat.
They should make it $100. I’m tellin’ ya, everyone would be “rich”.
Make it $25.00 an hour.....most are on welfare anyway : )
Somebody’s got half a brain.
The Right’s narrative on this is screwed up.
It’s not “jobs will be lost because employment costs will be too high”.
It’s “government prohibits producing less than $15/hr in value”, to wit “it’s illegal to work if you’re not productive enough”.
This is just a new twist on the ancient “debtor’s prison” concept: if you don’t earn/own enough, you’re not allowed to earn anything - you exist only at the pleasure & expense of the State.
You are right, but vast numbers of the population when using that terminology to explin a $15.00 wage would be looking back at you with a blank stare...
Just tell them their Big Mac will be $8.00 now and the light will bulb come on...
Ya wann'a be an adult?
ACT like one.
Good on YOU, Madame Mayor !
Well shit....I will quit my job and bleed the Goberment foo my money foo drugs.....screw this crap.
Yes, this new one has a bit more between the ears than former mayor Stephanie Rawlings (It’s just property) Blake. The city councilwoman mentioned who proposed the minimum wag hike, Mary Pat Clarke, is a former neighbor of mine. I used to walk the dog late at night and her husband would frequently come home in a limo tanked out of his mind. I think Ms. Clarke has mostly preferred the company of women. Hey, not that there’s anything wrong with that cause its Balmer, Hon.
Wow!!!What a concept...if a business loses money it quits hiring!!!
Guilty!!!
So Catherine Pugh is that one democrat who hasn’t lost her mind.
Before you all go on cheering her, she's doing nothing more than passing the buck to Republican Governor, Larry Hogan of Maryland.
She knows that Hogan will never sign it and that gives her political coverage for her actions in not signing the Baltimore City specific bill.
So this is NOT a case of a Democrat understanding the impact of raising the minimum wage to $15/hr. This is just another case of a Democrat keeping one of their core issues alive, never really solving a problem, and finding a way to blame someone else.
That's what's really going on here.
Nope, she's lost her mind alright. She just passed the buck onto REPBUBLICAN Governor Jim Hogan, who she knows isn't going to sign a $15/minimum wage bill.
Shes no hero.
15 members on their City Council? How do they ever get anything done? Can you imagine how long their City Council Meetings are?
Somebody in the Baltimordor government has a lick of sense.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
