Celebrating EUro-Sclerosis

Economics: For those not in the know, this weekend marks the gala 60th anniversary of the formation of what eventually became the European Union. Celebrate while you can, because it might not make it to 61.

The European Union will "celebrate" its 60th birthday officially on Saturday in a sad effort to make itself look still relevant. We don't mean to be snide, but it has precious little to celebrate.

Starting small, the 1957 Treaty of Rome created what was then called the European Economic Community from just six countries. It should have stayed small.

From those modest beginnings, it has turned into a bureaucratic goliath that controls — or at least tries to — nearly every aspect of European economic and cultural life, imposing its will on once-independent nations and destroying what was once a bustling, growing economy. Today, the EU is marked by stagnation, population decline, a dearth of entrepreneurialism and bureaucratic malaise.

USA Today noted that "Saturday's ceremony will see the bloc's 27 remaining members endorse a new Rome declaration that emphasizes unity and solidarity." That's the perfect empty expression of the EU bureaucracy: A comment celebrating something that no longer exists.

I have recently realized that this was the beginning of the Global Community. I thought the EEC was a good idea as it gave smaller countries more power in economic trade. Then came the EU. I was for Brexit. But then EU started requiring it’s members to take X numbers of refugees, decided in Brussels. Britain is oversaturated with Muslims, many radicals. Imported or born there, they simply could not take the numbers that Brussels was demanding. Sadly, even my husband’s cousin, in her 50’s, has been adamantly against Brexit. She wants the perks that come with the EU membership. No borders within the EU allows open travel and living/working lifestyles. But all that openness has been a disaster for the countries with an upwardly mobile population. Prayers for Europe. It was so much fun to visit there and see all the sights.
