GIFFORD (CBS12) The family of 21-year-old Alteria Woods, an innocent woman who was shot and killed during a S.W.A.T. Team raid in Gifford Sunday morning, said they are getting few answers from law enforcement.
Woods aunt, Arlene Cooper, said it is hard coming to grips with what has happened to her niece.
Ive never heard of this before. We dont know what to do, no closure, said Arlene Cooper, Alterias aunt.
Woods was caught in the crossfire of the shootout, killed by Indian River County Sheriffs deputies during the raid at the home, along 45th Street and 35th Avenue in Gifford.
I was in shock, said Cooper. Four months pregnant.
Cooper said the father of her nieces baby was 23-year-old Andrew Coffee IV.
He and his father, Andrew Coffee III, were the target of deputies when they carried out a raid.
Indian River County Sheriff Deryl Loar said the youngest Coffee used his girlfriend as a shield.
Andrew Coffee IV cowardly was using her as protection, said Sheriff Loar.
But the Sheriff also expressed remorse, calling Woods an innocent person, caught in the crossfire, as his deputies fired back the at Coffee IV who was shooting at deputies from a bedroom window.
Today, we mourn the loss of Alteria Woods. My thoughts and prayers go to her family, said Sheriff Loar.
The raid itself is in response to the recent shootings that included the death of Deputy Garry Chambliss.
Sunday, dozens of demonstrators turned out along the scene on 45th Street and 35th Avenue, calling for justice and peace between the black community and law enforcement.
I feel justice havent been done in this community, and something needs to be done, said Cooper.

Initiating violence makes the initiator responsible for the outcome.
If the Sheriff can’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt that there was no alternative to ordering a SWAT raid, he should be charged with manslaughter.
Let’s await passing judgment til we know the whole story. Like, how do we know she was being used as a shield and wasn’t shooting back at Law enforcement herself? Someone’s say-so? Check her for GSR.
The tragedy was that the cops had to be called. Really not much else unexpected.
He did not want to forgo the thrill of combat — safe combat.
May not work because she was close enough to have transfer.
Clearly bad intel. They could have easily sent someone to the door as a poll taker or a utility employee to gather intel before the raid. It seems that SWAT teams spend all their time pumping up and finally when the occasion arises they just let loose.
The real tragedy is having to call the cops.
There is perfect justice and peace between the black community and the police(’cept for the blacks shouting “Kill all the pigs”). The police were responding to a call for help from this community. They werent waiting around for a call to go out and shoot a pregnant woman, nor were they wanting to be shot at trying to protect the community that just called them for help. If the community fails to hold the responsible perpetrator guilty for his actions then it is this black community who is at fault here.
Dont call the jack boots unless you want them to show up and do what they do.
Today’s law enforcement doesn’t like to be patient.Too aggressive.
What state is ‘Gifford’ in?
Florida.
Florida, just north of Vero Beach
Yes, I agree they too often are.
If you have new toys, play with them?
Cops were serving a search warrant
I can’t wait for the day when the DMV gets main battle tanks.
Maybe the baby in the womb was shooting back, too. Right?
Come on, half the Police departments in the US have become hammers that see every situation as a nail.
That’s right. The cops are always guilty. /S
If you’re wearing Kevlar helmets and stacking up outside Americans’ doors with battering-rams and flashbangs. You’re not a cop anymore.
