If someone is interested in a AK-47 pattern rifle, need to check out the VZ-58 sold by Czech-point. They are made by CZ and IMO absolutely the best variant of the pattern. Only drawback though, is that the VZ-58 magazine is not AK-47 compatible and vice-versa.

Not quite. The AKM is the rifle you are describing.

IOs do suck but the RAS-47 is the worst US made AK. Poor heat treating and cost cutting on the trunnions make them dangerous.

If you want an AK get a VEPR or Arsenal. If want cheaper, get a WASR.

Same can be said about any other field. Hollywood makes stuff up either out of pure ignorance, disrespect to a particular profession/craft or because they think it will go over better at the box office.

Take NCIS, some of the things they say and do is just ridiculous. But it sure is entertaining.

Thank God my Army passed on it.
The USMC picked it up, but maybe they should have passed.
Hell, they had “Full Metal Jacket” coming down the pike.

The best AK is of course the Finnish RK-95 which was made in semi auto as the Sako M92S and that would be a great rifle to reproduce in the US.

Given a secure or guaranteed supply of 7,62x39mm M43 ammunition, I concur. It's a little heavy, but that helps control the weapon in full-auto fire instead of having to go to the lighter 5,45 cartridge, which milady prefers.

You can also make the argument that the better AK version is the Molot [hammer] RPK, in either semi or selective form and with which, in each of my three examples at least, is capable of one-a-second hits on a man-sized silhouette target at 400 yards for the entire magazine's worth. But it is not for everyone the way the AK is.

Thank you, Mikhael Timofeyavich. I know that you meant for your splendid invention to serve your country's soldiers in the defense of your motherland, but it also serves to help potect three generations of my own family as well. Spasibo, gospodon MikTim!

Meh.
Forge implies a heated billet.
Stamped implies a cold piece of sheet steel.

The AK-series has bounced several times between stamped (AKM) and forged receivers (AK-47).

And also of interest to those carrying a rifle pretty much 24/7 and using it *for real* the military version is about a pound-and-a-half lighter than an AK/AKM. That's enough difference to allow the carry of one more extra magazine, which, IIRC, were of aluminum like US GI M16A1 mags, which when carrying 2 or 3 is no big deal, but haul around a dozen or more and it's significant.

The Vz58 is a bit prone to overheating when fired continually on full-auto; not a problem with the *civilian* semiauto versions. The bayonets are kind of neat, too.

The WASR/WUM/SAR-1/2/3 Kalishnikovs are a fine rifle, and milady has several, mostly in the more recent 5,45x39 Soviet chambering. But though they have stamped/pressed receiver bodies they are not a *true* AKM inside, but rather AK74s in semiauto form, usually but not always chambered for the older 7,62 M43 cartridge, that *not always* being something that keeps my sweetie very happy.

IO’s are for people that enjoy feeling their receiver breath like a lung when firing.

*DO NOT WANT

It’s what they do.

A military moron like me thinks Heartbreak Ridge is great.

But even I KNOW no one would use live rounds to train and NO marine unit sits around all day playing pool and drinking with no one caring!!

I shall now have to put it under my enjoyable “fiction” movies :)

That scene in Grenada where they were trapped in the house with the tank outside, that did happen, though not exactly as was shown!!

WASR10 bumps. That’s a solid firearm and accurate as all get out.

Do yourself a favor and stain the furniture yourself. Stock is beyond ugly(pun intended).

“no one would use live rounds to train”

It’s been years since I watched Heartbreak Ridge, so I really do not remember in which manner live rounds were used.

But I do recall my own basic training, where live rounds were used quite often, in particular they had a machine gun firing over our heads (or so they told us, and quite high I’m sure)while we did the low crawl through barbed wire.

One thing I do recall is firing my M-14 into the air in a manner similar to artillery, where the idea was to hit a target behind a hill.

Another thing they taught was “quick fire”, which is basically shooting from the hip. We used air rifles for this, and most of us got quite good at it.

Thanks for jarring lose old memories.

That’s pretty cool stuff!

Yeah, he would shoot high over his unit’s head so they would KNOW when they hear an AK being used.

So I guess it was possible.

ANY chance a recon marine unit would get away with shooting pool and drinking beer and listening to the radio, while waiting for a new instructor to take over?

They were all in one house (i dont know what you guys call it) To me it was a house :)

I was Army, and have no idea what a Marine outfit would do. But I do know we were never, ever turned loose play pool and drink during duty hours. However in my era drinking and smoking was allowed just about any place after hours.

There were exceptions. There’s an extra duty called CQ, where someone has to staff the commanders office during off duty hours. In Vietnam he’s the only one with an air conditioner, and we’d pull off the cover and hide a six pack in there.

WASRs that are more then about 10 years old ha e some problems here and there. Nothing too widespread, but things like poor machining. Like probing out with your mag against the ground and causing a misfeed. They say newer ones are great. I got a Norinco

It just floors me that an American company can’t produce a safe and reliable AK.We’re not talking rocket science here,it’s a simple design.I bought a Serbian made AK about 4 years ago,put a thousand rounds through it so far with zero problems.Which is exactly what I would expect.
