South Korea liberals likely to win power, may bring softer North Korea stance

SEOUL (Reuters) - The liberal politician expected to succeed disgraced Park Geun-hye as South Korea's next president could significantly soften Seoul’s stance toward North Korea and possibly delay deployment of a U.S. missile-defense system that has enraged China.

A Constitutional Court on Friday dismissed Park from office after upholding her impeachment over a corruption scandal involving "chaebol", the family-run conglomerates that dominate Asia's fourth-biggest economy, and which could also face reform under a liberal leader.

A presidential election will be held by May 9 and opinion polls suggest South Koreans will opt for change by electing a liberal into the presidential Blue House, ending nine years of conservative rule.

The front-runner is Moon Jae-in, a human rights lawyer who was a top aide to former President Roh Moo-hyun, an advocate of a "sunshine policy" of engagement with North Korea.

Moon has criticized the two former conservative presidents – Park and her predecessor, Lee Myung-bak - for derailing the progress made inter-Korean relations during the previous liberal administrations.

You can't fix stupid.

And you cannot go to war to help stupid either.

South Korea is not a hill we want to die on.

We should save our advanced technology and support for Japan...provided they step up their military expenditures.

IF this turns out that a liberal does in fact take the helm in S. Korea, AND shows us a track record of leftist mismanagement (which is what they do), then I would have to agree.

let see them go ‘gangnam style’ when the fat little Nork is their dictator too.

The whole peninsula will be dark at night. Sounds like they are choosing suicide. So be it.

Well ok then let’s be sure we don’t deploy our state of the art Missle Defense equipment since we cannot guarantee it’s security with this

Sounds like South Korea is going to suffer greatly at the hands of their insane communist neighbors.

Showing weakness is inviting invasion or extortion.

The US should wash it’s hands, not our problem.

“The irony is that Moon Jae-in of the Democratic Party was once chief of staff to left-leaning president Roh Moo-hyun, who committed suicide in 2009 after being questioned over graft allegations”.

The South Koreans are a perplexing people.

My Dad fought in the Korean War. He said the South Korean kids threw rocks at the American Soldiers getting off the troopship to fight for them. He said the South Korean kids threw rocks at him when he was getting on the troopship to come home.

I took my Son to see the Korean War Memorial since his Grandfather had fought over there.

We’re standing there quietly taking in the memorial when probably a dozen Korean guys in suits come and put up wreaths to honor our Soldiers. No big ceremony. No television cameras. Very quiet and respectful. Very nice.

I think you need to study up on the modern South Korea. Klinger and Radar are no longer there. Korea and Japan are both VERY important trading partners with the United States, with Korea growing more so by the day, even more than Japan.

Not surprised it’s come to this.

I recall back in the Dubya days big media stuck a microphone in the faces of So Korean 20=somethings in bars and on the street. Without fail every one of them that the North and the South have a history of fighting because of the USA. Peace is achievable because: “We are all Koreans”.

Typical liberal indoctrination - Kim Jong Il just needs a bigger hug...

They can show their sincerity by shortening the little dictator by the size of his head.

The USA should walk away.

If the South Koreans want military security, they need to develop their own nuclear weapons.

I’ve been to Korea around a dozen times.

Yeah, a VERY important trading partner of $100bil per year.

That we run a $25 - $30billion annual trade deficit with.

We are VERY important to them, they are a parasite to us.

If that’s the case, I say let SK burn. Let the world again see the rape and torture and misery wrought by communism. I fail to see how this is our problem.
