Antibiotic-free meat gets a foothold in US

New York (AFP) - Facing pressure from environmentalists and shareholder activists, major US food companies and restaurant chains are moving to limit antibiotics in farm animals raised for meat.

Last month, Tyson Foods announced a "no antibiotics ever" pledge for all Tyson-branded chicken products, building on an earlier promise to restrict drug use on broiler chickens.

Analysts see the latest Tyson announcement as further evidence of a trend of large companies limiting pharmaceuticals that scientists believe increases drug-resistance for treating pneumonia, infections and other illnesses in humans.

How does this square with Tyson having their product cleaned and packed by the Chinese?

Is it an excuse to charge more for their product ?

Tyson Foods announced a "no antibiotics ever"

Not even when they're sick?

Um, it’s already illegal to treat chickens with antibiotics.

So “antibiotic free” is just an advertising ploy

I prefer they use paprika, parsley and garlic to treat their broilers. Pre- spiced chicken seems like a new fad.

One must ask: If these companies were able to successfully raise these animals and make a profit on the meat, why were they using antibiotics for the last 50 years?

So they would grow 10% faster. On 10% more feed.

They simply did not care if there were bad effects throughout the food chain and leakage into the environment.

Disclosure: I only eat animals and their products that have been pastured all their lives. But it’s because I can afford it.

My grocery and beer bill is around $150 per week as a single man. I NEVER eat out. ($20 of that is beer. I don’t drink cheap beer. All malt German style lagers.)

I don’t think everyone can. A couple with two teenagers would spend $500/week easily to eat the way I do.

It’s illegal to use HORMONES, not antibiotics.

Having no formal training in any of the biological sciences I'm not entirely sure what,if anything,to make of antibiotics in food. From my years in hospital administration, working closely with highly skilled physicians, surgeons and medical researchers,I know that there's a pretty serious issue with various bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics.IIRC feeding them to cattle and chickens is thought to accelerate that process.

I'd like to hear a reasoned argument in favor of deleting them from the food chain. And when I say "reasoned" I'm not talking about "environmentalists" or "animal rights activists".They're the last ones I'd see as being capable of "reason".I'm talking about scientists...scientists without a political or societal ax to grind.

Agree, I doubt we are getting the chickens back that we send over there to process. Replaced with either diseased or glow in the dark versions.

It’s very important to your gut microbiome to minimize antibiotic exposure. Mainstream medicine is really behind the learning curve on how vital this is to overall health, including your immune system and mental health.
Two doctors that are extensively interested in this topic are Dr. Mercola who has some articles on food antibiotics on his website, and Dr. Perlmutter, whose best-known book is Grain Brain, but has also written a book totally devoted to the gut microbiome, called “Brain Maker.”
Many in this field feel that messed up gut microbes contribute to a wide range of diseases, from autoimmune to depression to chronic pain from inflammation.

no antibiotics ever

Why would you want meat from a diseased animal?

“How does this square with Tyson having their product cleaned and packed by the Chinese?”

Had Trump brought that up during the election he’d have won the popular vote too.

The use of antibiotics in chickens is not of great importance. Antibiotic use can increase resistance in bacteria if we do not eat raw chicken (I do not) the chance of spreading this resistance to humans is small. I do eat raw beef as in steak tartar. It is delectable but does carry a risk that I willing take.

Per the FDA about 25% of raw poultry is contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is a normal bacteria in the gut of all birds. It does not hurt them but will sure as hell make humans sick. If you buy a pack of chicken with many thighs or breasts in it there is almost a certainty it is contaminated. This is really not a problem. Cook it to the proper temperature and clean you work area well. I like chicken.

Few pathogenic bacteria cross species lines but some do. The resistance to antibiotics we see in humans is almost always a result of human to human bacterial resistance caused by antibiotic use in humans and not animals. E Coli is a major exception and a few others. That is where my love of steak tartar gives me risk. I am will not stop eating it nor will I stop eating ceviche. Steak tartar never did me in but ceviche did once. It was contaminated by unhygienic preparation. It tasted great but I did pay a price.
