A Republican-dominated White House, Senate, and House of Representatives are trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA), former President Barack Obama's ambitious health care overhaul.
They've run into some problems, however.
[Snip]
NFL players make millions, so it may be surprising to know many rely on the ACA for health insurance.
DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the National Football League Players' Association (NFLPA), explained on CBS' Face of The Nation last month that the "100 percent injury rate" in football means that all players have pre-existing conditions - health issues that began before their post-retirement insurance policies took effect.
When players leave the NFL, they take with them lingering ailments from the game that can make buying health insurance costly. Before Obamacare, insurers could charge people more or deny them coverage altogether based on pre-existing conditions. The Affordable Care Act banned those practices, making it much easier for former players to get coverage.
The NFL doesn't offer a comprehensive health benefits program for all former or retired players. Those programs can also be hard to find, hard to access, and hard to qualify for.

Gist of Article: Dumb jock with big body-small brain ... made millions ... didn't know how to plan ahead ... blew everything on wine, women and dope ... needs government subsidy and insurance mandate to survive ... repealing Obamacare will kill all sports ... Freepers need to get out checkbooks right now!
They can always avoid a career in the NFL.
They’re rich enough to self-insure so boo fricking hoo.
I could care less what effect it has a on pro sports.
They are overpaid prima donnas who should get real jobs.
NFL players are too stupid to negotiate insurance coverage in their contracts, so we all have to pay higher premiums to cover their careers after they've earned more money in a year or two than most Americans earn in a lifetime?
This is a pathetic article.
If the NFL went extinct it would not affect me at all, except that there would now be more unemployed, violent felons on the street, putting my family at increased risk of assault/rape/murder.
On second thought, we must protect the NFL at all costs!
HUAC - husseins unaffordable care act
I don’t care about what overpaid players in American sports have with their healthcare. If there’s an inherent problem then their sports agents had damned will better negotiate a contract that addresses the problem. Not my or regular America’s problem.
Actually, the 30% surcharge on pre-existing conditions for 1-year is a good idea. Insurance companies could compete using different rates, etc.. NFL players should be able to pay the surcharge.
The rest of JebCare ... well, it’s another establishment turd.
Spend some of your big bucks on your health care rather than blowing it all
Excuse me, but shouldn’t the NFL take care of its own?
I’m with you- a union for millionaire players doesn’t have this sewn up and put to bed forever?
Good, hopefully we can get the Negro Felons League and the Negro Bangers Association to move to China where they will get the treatment they deserve.
If the NFL went out of business the average male IQ would increase 10 points.
And he squandered the rest.
What if we went full-Obamacare and eliminated team physicians and on-site X-rays. Oh, you got your bell rung right before halftime? Well, you can see the neurologist in 6 weeks.
Fine, Congress to the rescue. Since professional athletes can’t manage their own finances and healthcare, Congress must regulate professional sports and force the industry to negotiate post career health care for the athletes. Drops the mic.
The NFL has more than enough money to take care of these guys. The taxpayers shouldn’t have to.
There should be ‘high-risk’ coverage.
They can get a real job paying real wages. I’m not interested in reading about whining millionaires soaking the taxpayers for insurance.
