Poachers have broken into a French zoo, killing a four-year-old white rhinoceros and sawing off its horn.
Keepers found the dead animal, named Vince, in the African enclosure of the zoo at Thoiry, west of Paris, on Tuesday morning. It had been shot in the head and its large horn removed with a chainsaw.
The poachers fled before they could remove the animals second horn, either because they were disturbed or because their equipment failed, police said.
Authorities described the incident as the first of its kind in Europe.
The poachers forced a grill at the rear entrance to the zoo, near the rhinoceros enclosure. They then broke through two further locked doors into the building containing three white rhino on Monday night.
Its possible the thieves didnt have time to take the others, a police spokesman said.
Park director Thierry Duguet said the attack was unbelievable and that Vince had been one of the most popular attractions at the zoo.

Which is why all rhino horns and elephant tusks should be removed by zoos which have such animals, to render them useless to poachers.
Immigrants.
NOTHING said about the appearance of the perpetrators. Do you really think this zoo didn’t have surveillance cameras? Best bet is African migrants.
My bet, as well.
I would rather we remove the private parts from poachers w/o anesthesia. It seems more fair, and a better deterrent.
Can that apply to terrorist invaders as well?
The defense will be “Poachers are victims too”

Protecting zoos ... this may be one way to encourage Europe to spend more on military.
Without a doubt.
Could be Chinese gangsters too.
In addition to killing these majestic creatures poachers are seriously damaging the economies of nations that don't have much of anything to sell (for hard currency) other than their national parks.
And it's all for the pleasure of (mainly) Arabs and Chinese who, forty years ago, were living like savages with their camels or cape buffalo.
Wouldn’t have anything to do with superstitious African immigrants, would it?
A couple years ago, the owner of an African Safari company was next to me for a cross country flight.
He confirmed that there is no real poaching problem, nor are animals endangered in the countries of Africa where they have legal and well maintained hunting laws and seasons.
He sort of implied that if they do come across poachers, they take care of the problem locally.
That said, I’m absolutely no animal rights guy. I took a lot of heat here on FR the other day because I commented that a $3500 reward (their life savings) for a missing dog was kind of stupid.
Animals that serve a purpose are great. (sled dogs, work dogs, police dogs etc) But I have no real use for pets.
Killing a rhino at a zoo is the height of cowardice.
The French should look for the horn among their Yemeni “refugees”. It is used to make the handles for their daggers also known as “jambias”.
LOL. Any idea which episode that is from?
