There are many claimants to the honor of having nudged Donald Trump over the top in the presidential election. But the folks with the best case are the National Rifle Association and the consultants who made their TV ads.
The NRA did just about everything right. It endorsed Trump last May when he was still just the de facto nominee. The goal was to persuade Second Amendment supporters whod backed other candidates to unify behind him.
The NRA planned ahead. It had lined up TV time months beforehand when rates were lower. That saved money. Thus when the Access Hollywood tape threatened to capsize the Trump campaign a month before the election, the NRA had cash on hand for a fresh ad to steady Trump.
And the NRA kept track of every word Hillary Clinton uttered on the subject of guns. This wasn't new. It's what an interest group does. Once she was the Democratic nominee, they were ready to shred her claim to back the Second Amendment and the right of women to own guns.
In before the “I’ll never give another nickel to the NRA!” crowd.
I have given them about a grand I’d guess. I feel like I shouldn’t have to give them another nickel. but I probably will.
Money well spent considering the results of President Trump versus 3 time Loser Hillary.
The NRA helped more than the GOP did
I actually was thinking about this the other day—nobody ever talks about how much the NRA did to get Trump elected.
I, for one, am extremely grateful and will continue to support the NRA.
You are absolutely right about that. The Republican Party did nothing but try to sabotage Trump. A few stray Republicans left the reservation and backed a winner, but for the most part, the Party just whined and clutched their pearls.
After we saw the first ad we both joined the NRA.
L
Hillary would have drained our lakes and dam the rivers to get our guns.
Never forget.
The NRA has learned that its own interests are entwined with actual support and defense of a robust Second Amendment.
It was not always thus. The NRA had to be dragged to this position, kicking and screaming. It was dragged there by the membership.
It is a very good thing.
This is actually a really good point and one I acknowledging observing but not fully taking into account until this after action analysis.
You just think that the NRA is going to rubber stamp whoever the R candidate will end up being because the alternative would cause them to basically be suicidal.
However their ads were out there early, often and they were frequently (If not always.) the most effective on our side any given week of the campaign season.
Frequently I put on my former TV sales/ad hat and think “They could have done this... or that...” and I never did think that about a spot that was tagged with the NRA logo. Hell, I never thought that about a Trump official campaign ad.
I won’t say that any organization put Trump over the top. Only Trump can be Trump. However the NRA was the most consistent top performer when it came to electronic media that this current President had from outside monied groups.
Obviously, Russians are in control of the NRA!
The NRA is quite possibly the ONLY organization that can actually flip a Democrat to vote Republican (and in much rarer cases, vice versa)...rather than maybe get a Republican to actually vote, versus not vote.
That’s why the scare the Democrats (and Republicans, thankfully) as much as they do.
I’ve been an NRA member for decades, but, they endorsed Koster a demrat by party and a huge Obama supporter for Missouri governor—the Former Navy Seal, Eric Grietens the republican won. Koster’s only conservative value was he supported the 2nd amendment. I have not paid my NRA dues this year. How would you respond to NRA? I’m just asking.
Sometimes it's the democratic candidate.
Grietens has already signed a bill allowing conceal carry in Missouri without paying a fee. The previous governor, a confident of Koster’s, vetoed the same bill twice. Being pro 2nd amendment is inconsistent with supporting a Muslim bastard that hated the country and would ban all guns in private hands.
Not always true. If the incumbent is reasonably pro-gun they will back him over a more pro-gun challenger, on the basis that the incumbent usually wins and they don't want to burn their bridges. That sometimes means supporting a Democrat. That can be irritating, but you can't argue with the results. It's why no gun control bills were passed in 2009-2010 when the Dems controlled the House, Senate and WH.
-—yep—as I have often stated , the NRA has to work in the reality of Washington, DC—not in some fantasy land where sturdy yoemanry hold off hordes of U.N. backed Senabulgaro troops at the left bank of the Mississippi with our SMLE’s, Moisin-Nagant’s and 03A3’s-—
—that’s the most annoying part of it —and the spineless GOP still acts like the Dems are in control—
Yup
